How to gift a digital game to intended recipient

That is not how the gift system works. If the recipient already has the game or doesn’t want it
the recipient can give the code to someone else to redeem. Or, they can ask you to
return the item for a refund. The recipient can’t return or exchange the gift code.

Unfortunately if you purchase digital content it can only be gifted to someone in the same region/country. This includes DLC. You can follow the steps in the "Recipient can't redeem code" section on the game gifting help page.

When you purchase a gift for a friend the system asks for a delivery point either an email address or gamer tag, The system then sends a 25 digit redeem code to that delivery point. It does not check if the recipient already has the game or if they are
in the same region as the sender. That is down to you as the customer and purchaser to check.

As the recipient already has the game in this case it is down to the purchaser/ the person who sent the gift to issue a refund claim.

Hey, that's a great question, Derrell. Currently, there is no way of purchase a digital game gift in advance and the delivering the code on a specific day, like Christmas. It's a great idea that would work well with birthdays as well!

Until a feature like that gets implemented, you can purchase the games on Christmas Day using the Buy as Gift option and specifying the recipient's email address associated with their gamertag. They will receive an email with a code to download the game
shortly after the purchase is made.

You will be charged immediately upon purchase of the Gift at the price indicated when you complete your purchase. Microsoft does not offer price matching should the price change in the future. You must designate a single Gift recipient using the individual’s
email address. Once you have completed the purchase, an email will be sent to the Gift recipient containing a code (“Code”) to redeem the Gift. The email will be sent to the recipient immediately following purchase. Gifts can only be purchased and redeemed
by users in the same country/region, and only at Participating Stores.
