Can you explain a little more about how they are not working?

Gold trials do not change your account status to gold so there are some things you can't do while on a trial card. Some trial cards will only work for the game they came with. If you're trying to play Destiny, that game requires a paid gold subscription.

also i've heard people say it's a nightmare to cancel anto-renewal (have to phone microsoft and argue for ages), so how hard is it to cancel it? i've also heard some people with silver accounts and credit card details on their account who involuntarily became

The XBOX Live Gold Trial will only work if you enter in valid billing information and a credit card. It will display this status code "80070057" if no billing/payment information is available or is not valid.

You will need to enter that information in and then proceed to make a new account to receive the trial.

The trial isn't even a Gold status, so the Gold card will take immediate effect.
