How to get sound through HDMI?

I have the Xbox 260 Slim model and I wanted to buy a monitor to play it on which has an HDMI port, but no built in speakers.

How will I be able to get any sound through the HDMI ports?

I'm assuming it's next to your computer and you have separate computer speakers? Then plug the red and white cables, might require a splitter, into your computer.

What I do is use an audio receiver and hook it up with an optical digital audio wire. Obviously you need speakers to attach. I don't think there is any other way to do it.

I'm having the same problem with my 360 E 4 gig. I had it hooked up to my Onkyo AVR and played fine for the last couple weeks PRIOR to hooking it up to the internet. As soon as i updated the xbox i lost sound through the HDMI. Tested cable straight to another
TV and its not the problem. Looks like maybe a handshake issue between the AVR and XBOX

I’m very happy with mine too, however, when I use the sound bar for pass through and select arc I get no sound or picture and have to run it through the hdmi option. If I connect the Xbox to the tv hdmi 2 and then the sound bar to hdmi 3(arc) I get picture
with no sound despite all settings suggesting that it should work. If I use an in built app on the tv and watch it through arc it works perfectly. All mildly frustrating.

At your home, what display settings do you have it set on? For example your XBOX could be set on 1080p and the TV at the motel might not be able to accept that setting.

Usually when dealing with sound issues, we also need to take the controller headphone jack input on the bottom of the controller into consideration. Since you say it works when not plugged into your Xbox controller, it may be the headphone jack is dirty
or damaged and the controller can't recognize the headset.

To test this out, I would suggest to find an extra controller you may have and try it on that one. If you have any headphones or earbuds with a microphone and in the format pictured above, then test those out as well.

There are a number of indicators on your Xbox to let you know when the controller is not picking up the headset. On your Home screen, a headset icon will appear at the top right corner of the screen next to the battery level. When you start a party chat,
there will be a message saying microphone cannot be found and your gamer picture will be greyed out when a headset is not detected. Whenever you have a headset plugged into the controller, a new "Audio" setting is found in your system menu below Settings.
If you do not see that, the headset is not being detected.

Try some of these steps out to figure out if you need to replace the controller or find an Xbox Stereo Headset Adapter. Let us know the results!
