how to get out of a game and get back to xbox 360 dashboard

I am new to the xbox 360 and I can't seem to figure out how to get out of a game and back to the dashboard. The only way I can do it now is to eject the disc and it automatically brings the dashboard up. Is there a way to do it from within the game with
the controller? Thanks!

Press the large silver button in the middle of the controller, it fetches up a menu to go to home page.

You should never eject a disc while playing a game, it can do damage.

 

As long as the DVD drive in the console is still working correctly, ejecting the disc to end a game should have no ill effects. The console will spin the drive down to a complete stop before ejecting the disc. Accessing the mini guide and going to dashboard
that way is still the better option though.

 

Ejecting the disc while playing can corrupt your save data, maybe even your hard drive.

 

Never had that happen. You can corrupt a save by going to the dashboard if it's in the middle of saving, no matter which way you do it. That's why many games have a warning about not turning off the console or quitting a game when a game is saving.

It is, and always has been, perfectly safe to press the eject button in game as long as it is not saving.

 

I have had game save corrupt by pressing eject accidentally.

I remember doing it on batman AA and kingdom of amalur, both times i had to start all over again.

I definitely wasn`t saving at the time either.

Anyway, I still agree your answer about bringing up the mini guide so, we'll leave it at that. It's the way I always do it too.

 

The best way to exit a game is through the game itself. Usually, you can push the "start" button (which is the little white one with an arrow to the right of the big silver X button) and it will pause the game and bring up the games menu. From there you
can save, load previous saves, exit the game etc. That is the best way to do it since that allows games to know you are exiting and lets them save for you. Of course not all games automatically save when you exit, so myself I manually save if the game has
that option then use the exit option.

Failing that, push the big silver X button right in the middle to bring up the 360 menu. Then just push the yellow "Y" button to exit the game and go to the 360 dashboard. But again, the "start" button is the best route.
