How to get old gamertag back

A gamertag I've had since 2012 was recently changed by a friend of mine without my knowledge and I was wondering if there's any way to get it back as it was an autogenerated tag that's longer than the 12 character count allowed nowadays. Would I have to
contact Xbox support for it or is it lost to the sands of time forever. My Microsoft account still shows the gamertag but the xbox profile shows the changed one.

If it's longer than 12 characters then i'm afraid not.

I'd suggest not letting your friends on your account as that can get you into trouble.You can even put a pass key on your account to prevent other people using it.

It sounds like your old account is on a different e-mail. If not then most likely the old Microsoft Account got closed. If THAT is the case then you'll need to contact phone support again as they'll need to escalate your case to get your gamertag moved
onto a new Microsoft Account.

So you changed your gamertag, not just created a new account? If that's what you mean then you'd have to try changing your gamertag again. However, it is possible someone else could have gotten the tag so you might not be able to switch back.

No, I said old gamertag witch I am currently not using anymore. It was on my current email address.

the only way for there to be two gamertags on one email is a system glitch, there is more than likely a different email being used as the Microsoft account for the old gamertag
