How to Get FreeSync and ATMOS at the same time from XBOX ONE X

    OK,

I am not quite able to connect all the dots with my XBOX ONE X so that I can get FreeSync and ATMOS sound at the same time.

I have a Samsung QLED Q9 (which supports FreeSync 2)

I have a Yamaha RX-A880 (which support HDCP 2.2, HDR10, and Dolby Atmos, and all the other goodies I need)

    But here is the problem

If I plug the XBOX into the Yamaha AVR through to the TV, FreeSync and Low Latency gets disabled... GRRR (all the other 4k settings are checked an in the green, just no FreeSync or Low Latency).

If I plug the XBOX into the Samsung TV and use ARC audio back, the best audio I get is Dolby Digital (not DD+)…. GRRR.

The Yamaha does support eARC (so can receive DD+ from the TV), the Samsung also supports sending DD+ via ARC to the AVR, but apparently it can only do that with its own TV apps, If I try to push the Bitstream DD+ signal from the XBOX I get an error, the
Samsung will only accept a BITSTREAM DD at the max... GRRR.

The XBOX ONE X only has one HDMI out, if it has 2 HDMI out ports that probably would have solved it. Arg!

Maybe everything will eventually come together with some firmware fixes but darn, I wish that had worked! The FreeSync is gorgeous so I think I will go with better video then better audio :-(

Anyway, if anyone has any ideas on how to make this work... that would be awesome, I am guessing that no HDMI splitters or AVRs out there support passing through whatever is needed to make FreeSync work at this point, and eARC is so new that it is tricky
at best. Too bad XBOX doesn't make a USB adapter to send out a second HDMI signal or something (or that you could convert the second HDMI on the back to be an HDMI out to pass through the audio signal), that would probably fix it too!

    :)

How to Get FreeSync and ATMOS at the same time from XBOX ONE X

I understand your frustration, but the issue is not with Xbox directly, but with Yamaha and Samsung not supporting FreeSync or ARC properly.

From my experience, no Samsung TV ever gave a proper ARC signal from other HDMI input signals. Only from it's internal tuner (be it live TV or Samsung internal apps), where the TV is producing the sound, and sending it to the TV, which annoys us when using
our FireTV stick on our Samsung TV.

If the TV gets the sound from a different HDMI input, it's unable to directly forward that audio through it's ARC port. I don't know if it's a technical limitation or licensing issues that prohibit Samsung from sending the original Bitstram via eARC.

On the other hand: You might have to contact Yamaha, so they can implement FreeSync support in their next generation of receivers, or maybe are able to have a firmware update for your existing receiver.

As a workaround, you can also try the following:

Plug in a headphone into your controller, and then in the Display & Audio settings enable Windows Sonic for headphones, or if you have purchased the Dolby Atmos for headphones app, you can also use Dolby Atmos.

This will enable spatial surround through your headphones, and you can then enjoy Freesynced refresh rates WHILE enjoying spatial 3D surround sound.

If you're unsure about the capabilities of Windows Sonic compared to Dolby Atmos for headphones, the Dolby Atmos Access app gives you a 14 day trial. So you can directly compare Dolby Atmos with Windows Sonic, and decide if there is an audible difference
that warrants the purchase of Dolby Atmos for headphones.

Alternatively, if you don't have a nice pair of headphones yet, you could kill two birds with one stone, and buy yourself a Plantronics RIG headset, that has a redeemable code for Dolby Atmos (take care, as there are some models that are being sold WITHOUT
the code for Dolby Atmos as well). Personally, I am pleased with the Plantronics RIG 400HX Atmos.

Unfortunately I primarily want the ATMOS for movie watching so using headphones doesn't do the trick. I am less concerned about ATMOS for games, and can use the headset in that case.

You seem to imply that Yamaha is the problem for not supporting FreeSync… are you saying there are known receivers that do support FreeSync pass through? Would love to know what those receivers are?

Since FreeSync is mainly used in a gaming environment, where you expect higher refresh rates and even changing refresh rate depending on your video card's ability to render frames under heavy load, you'll usually find FreeSync support in displays for computers.

Entertainment Receivers are primarily used for "regular" music and movie videos. So you usually have a standard fixed framerate of 24FPS, 50FPS (in PAL countries) and 60FPS (in NTSC countries). So the image processors for these receivers usually only work
    at these standard refresh rates.

Basically, in the past, consoles tried to work with these "standard" TV refresh rates, so consoles work with standard home entertainment equipment.

But since Xbox One is basically a "PC in disguise", they try to differentiate themselves from other consoles, to provide a feature for the "hardcore gamer", by unlocking the refresh rate via FreeSync. However, FreeSync only works if all image processing
devices also "understand" FreeSync. And unless your receiver also gets a firmware update, or newer receivers get FreeSync Support, you're out of luck of getting both at the same time.

Currently I know of no receiver that supports FreeSync. So it would be wise to contact Yamaha (or any other maker for receivers, that you might be interested in the future), and ask them to support FreeSync, since that will influence your future buying decision.

ARC as of now can not pass advance HD audio. I am in the same boat. You need to use an hdr compliant splitter. 1 in 2 out. Not a switch. One out to your TV. 1 out to your receiver. Then goto disc & blu-ray under settings. Select blu-ray. Then check the let
my receiver decide audio. This will give you audio that you want for movies. However, I am not sure it will work with games. I get a new splitter tomorrow in hopes the game atmos will work. Will let you know.

The atoms game feature on Xbox is very dicey unless you have a receiver that supports hdr and atmos. Mine only does atmos. Hopefully MS finds away to make atmos for games work for legacy equipment.

... Such as slowing game audio to be passed straight to the receiver so the receiver can decode it.

Also take ARC out of the equation. ARC is really best suited for simple av setups with a 2.0 soundbar.
