its simple, where you getting the download from may not be the best route .. so closer route to the server or more direct link to server could improve download speed rather than being bounced off loads of servers before destination, I'm sure I said that
somewhere before lol ...

You can download several different apps that will check DNS speeds for you. I used one called DNS Benchmark (there is a free version that works well enough). It will check your connection to hundreds of different DNS servers, Google included.

You can even customize it to look for more local DNS servers (which very well may be faster) that may not be included in its database, which is already fairly large.

My search found that my primary DNS server that was provided by my ISP is a good bit better than Google's, so user beware... using the '8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4' may help you... but it could hurt you as well. At least it isn't difficult to try it though.
