How to delete your old gamer tag

There is an old xbox gamer tag linked to my email. How do I delete that tag so I can add my gamer tag to the email?

my old gamer tag COWBELL SLC is from my 360 days. The email associated with it is not longer accessible. To get playing on my 1 I created a new gamer tag of . Is there a way to merge the two or update my email on the old one and delete the new

I believe after a set amount of inactivity old Gamertags are deleted and made available to new players and people requesting to change their Gamertag.

Changing your Gamertag will erase your old name. If you are, however, wanting to remove your profile then you can do this by clicking

here.

 

If you want it to be deleted immediately, just try to change it to something else. You may have to pay for it if you have done it before already for free. Secondly, once a Gamertag becomes invalid, other players can get them.
