How to connect my Xbox One to my 5.1 Surround sound system (optically)

    Hey guys,

I know this might be a difficult one as everybody has a different set-up, but I have looked at my system and to my mind there is no reason why it won't work, but I have tried various ways to get the sound coming out and tried everything I logically can think
of, but I am stumped. Here is how I have the thing set up at the moment.

Xbox One is connected to one of the HDMI inputs on my tv.

Xbox One is connected to my 5.1 surround sound DVD/amplifier combi via and optical cable

With this in mind once I have selected the correct mode on the amplifier then I should theoretically get sound, but I am not. Of course I have video and I could get sound if I swapped the optical cable out of the 5.1 and put it directly into the optical
input on my tv, but then would I still be able to take advantage of the surround sound as I would be diverting from the amplifier and going from the Xbox straight to the tv.

Thanks loads of someone can hep

    Thanks

    Malc

    :)

    Xbox One and Optical Out

Well that sucks. I have a 5.1 dolby surround sound system which uses an optical connection. I guess it will just output stereo sound now to all 5 speakers? Or will it just be the 3 front ones?

I'll check if my TV has an optical input, if so will it output 5.1 dolby to my system that way?

    Surround sound issue

Ok I have a 5.1 surround sound system with a receiver/dvd player combo and that's connected with a audio optical cable directly to the Xbox one and hdmi to the tv settings on xbox are optical out, bitstream, dolby digital and for games and blue ray 5.1 surround
works perfect but for hulu and music and dvds even certified for 5.1 surround only come in on my front two speakers and the woofer (2.1 stereo sound) shouldn't my xbox be smart enough to mix the sound to all speakers if it's coming through as stereo sound?

Hey man! Totally feel your frustration on this one, the Optical Audio can be a bit tricky to get working sometimes, depending on the system. As for the hookup itself, you sound as though you have it hooked up perfectly. You are right that if you plug the
optical into the TV, you likely won't get surround sound. You will want to look up the specific model of your TV, because some DO have an SPDIF-Out, which may or may not output surround sound. Most of the time, any optical cable into the TV will only get stereo,
    though.

Now, as for the actual settings - you will want to go into your Xbox One settings as Oliver mentioned, but there are a couple of things to check. First, as he said, you will want HDMI Audio to be set to "Off." and then, Digital Audio should be set to "Optical."
Now, here's the interesting part - even though most receivers should be able to handle both DTS and Dolby Digital, you will want to test both of those settings. For example, I have a 7.1 surround receiver which is compatible with both DTS and Dolby Digital,
however when I set it to DTS, I get no sound at all. When I switch to Dolby Digital, everything works perfectly.

    Let me know!

    Help Needed!

I have the same issue with my Xbox. If it is connected via HDMI the 5.1 sound will rarely work going to my surround sound receiver regardless of what the settings are in the Xbox but if I connect it using an optical audio cable the 5.1 works without fail.

The Xbox is an Arcade edition.

    no surround on x1?

Ya i plug my surround sound system through digital optical and all I get is distorted sound occasionally (crackles) and no 5.1 . There are no crackles through my tv to surround or xbox 360 through surround. I will be sending this unit back if no sound
update fixes this but not until I test it a little longer.

Will XBox Series X support external DAC/Amp hardware via USB?

I’m no where in your league guys. I’ve got a Logitech Z906 5.1 surround sound connected to Xbox One X using optical, which is good for my needs. How am I going to connect to the Series X. Am I going to have to buy a new system and if so which one? I am
also using a Asus MG24UQ monitor.
