How to connect 2nd controller for 2player game?

I've sorted it...unable to play local co op on cloud gaming but if I download the game its possible!!

I've tried that and it doesn't work...the controller doesn't seem to play local. There must be a way as you can buy the console with two controllers, ours only came with one so bought the other separate so we can play two player together....Thanks for the help so far...there must be a way!!

He's playing under his Mum's account, which he plays Fortnite and all the other cloud games on. We have an issue of playing two player games, just can't seem to figure it out.....want to play It Takes Two together or any other two player games. The controller is set up but not for two player games>>

does you son have an account on the xbox too, you need an account for each player, even if its just a local account.
