How much should I pay Gilligan to put down ladder in Majula in Dark Souls 2?

Gilligan has moved to Majula, and had an option to set up/put down ladder into pit. You can pay 3 different amounts of souls? What do the different choices of souls do? How much should I pay him? I want a long ladder so I can climb back up from bottom
of pit if possible. You can pay 500, ?, or 12000 souls. Thanks in advance for any help.

Kill the Giants in the Gulch and use the key to open the locked door I the huge hole in Majula. The longest ladder down the hole lead right to the platform which has the ladder to the door. Three chests and a corpse to the left of the doorway into the chest
room, corpse has the talon.

Yes, I did it, but it has no body. Only the three chest.

 

Each amount that you can pay corresponds to a different length and a different ladder. Each of the three lead you to a different stop on the way down. I believe that if you do the longest ladder, it leads to a platform with another ladder that goes up
to a door that needs a key (which you find much further down in Black Gulch). You can take this ladder to skip past the optional area of Grave of Saints and go straight to The Gutter.

Note: none of the ladders go all the way to a solid surface, so none of them allow you to climb back up once you drop off them.

 

If I'm not mistaken, when you buy the cheap one, it comes up extremely short, and you die when dismounting it. I assume this is meant as a tongue-in-cheek joke by From. The only one I ever found a use for was the expensive one, for the reasons Red Point
gave.

I didn't die from using the shortest one. Maybe you have to be at full health or something to use it?

 

Buy the cat ring from the cat in majula (house right next to the pit, opposite gilligan) and by the cheapest ladder. You can also use fall control if you don't have the souls for the ring (15k souls IIRC). The cheapest one will be very short and you will
die if you don't have either the ring or spell. Also, the other 2 ladders will stop on a platform, so you can go back up if you feel you don't want to go down just yet. But, you can make it down with just the ring or spell.

 

Sorry, but I believe you are incorrect in saying that the other 2 ladders stop on a platform. I don't think any of the ladders stop on a platform. None of them allow you to go back up once you've dropped off of them as far as I know.

Can someone confirm this?

 

I can confirm this as I've been down on both. The longest one goes to the platform with the other ladder to the stone door. The second one leads to a platform just a couple below the top platform that the cheap ladder goes to.

 

I just tried it and it allowed me to get back on the longest ladder, but not the second longest.
