How important is HDCP 2.2 (Xbox One X 4k)

Hello everyone.

I just bought an Xbox One X and now I obviously want to buy a 4k monitor to make the most of it.

Looking at different monitors, I've seen some do and some don't support HDCP 2.2. How important is this for playing in 4k on the X? What limitations would I have if I buy a monitor without HDCP 2.2? Does it only affect things like streaming and Blu-Rays?

Hdcp error playing bluray

What is the model of your TV? The Xbox One S/X requires an HDCP 2.2-compliant display in order to play 4K movies. An HDCP error on the Xbox One may indicate that your TV is not compliant with HDCP 2.2, or
it's at least not enabled over the specific HDMI input.

You can buy a splitter to ignore/bypass HDCP requests, but I do not know how well that works.

Blu Ray player not playing Ultra HD Blu Ray discs

Just to answer my own question and provide the results, I was not using the TV HDMI input that supported HDCP 2.2. Since HDCP 2.2 is used for 4K copy protection you must be connected via HDMI to an input that supports HDCP 2.2 when watching protected 4K content. Once
I changed my TV input from the 4:4:4 supported input to the HDCP 2.2 input the Ultra HD Blu Rays played. It's too bad my TV has 4:4:4 and HDCP 2.2 on separate inputs. Also, I will need to upgrade my AVR to one that supports HDCP 2.2. Once I add my AVR back
into the middle between the TV and Xbox One X, the discs will not play again since my current AVR does not support HDCP 2.2.

Having an HDCP 2.2 compliant display allows you to play 4K movies, either through streaming or UHD blu-rays. Having an outdated version of HDCP will cause the 4K content to drop down to 1080p, or not be available at all.

While there is supposed to be no HDCP used during gameplay, YMMV; I remember past threads of people complaining about the screen randomly going blank while playing games because their displays were outdated. I'd stick to HDCP 2.2 compliant monitors while
you're shopping around, just so you don't have to deal with any compatibility problems down the road.

Hey, in order for 4K to work, all devices must have HDCP 2.2. 4k content makers use this software to protect its 4K content. The Xbox One S has HDCP 2.2 but your TV may not have it. Check in your manual or call samsung and ask them. I actually ran into
the same problem. I bought a 4K UHD HDR compatable denon a/v receiver. But for some reason it did not support HDCP 2.2. So now I have to directly connect the Xbox to my TV. My LG TV supports HDCP 2.2.
