HOW HARD DO OUR XBOX'S WORK??

    Hi,

I couldn't find any info anywhere..

Just curious about how hard the xbox is working in online vs offline gameplay...

for instance... I have a 360 slim. I mainly play forza 4 offline & the console makes some noise getting started but then is pretty quiet with the ocasional sound of the fan blowing... But when I play Call of Duty : Ghosts online it seems like the console
is working a bit harder & the fan comes on more frequently. Also, both games are downloaded to the hard drive .

I know they are two different games with different requirements for running etc etc I do understand that playing online requires more functions etc

I am wondering what the difference of stress/work load on the xbox is in offline vs online play.

Hopefully this makes sense...if not I will do my best to re-word my question. thanks !!!

    :)

Im getting the gears of war console currently have a 250 gig slim xbox how do you transfer content between the two. I know how to do it with with the old hard drives just cant see how you would do it between two slim xbox's

    From my own observation.

When you play a game locally, the HDD has to only keep up with the demands of a single player data load.

When playing online those demands of transfering data increases and the internal HDD heats up a lot faster, which in turn puts more heat on the whole system.

I always said that putting a HDD in a ventless incloser was a very bad idea. If the excess heat has you concerned you might look into obtaining a well vented external and transfer your games over to, and running them from it.

Just keep in mind that the slim on its own also generates a lot of heat, so place the external well enough away from it that the heat from the system isn't getting to it.

For what its worth: My 2 cents.

    thanks electro!

I def. understand what your saying, it makes sense that there is more data to transfer & process while playing online which in turn creates more work for the console.

I have noticed that my slim seems to get pretty warm on the top exhaust vent above the fans (I have my slim horizontal) & a little warm on the side exhaust vent. The intake side vent has always stayed cool & actually the whole top of the console seems to
stay really cool other then the vent above the fans. (which I would think is normal due to the fans moving the hot air out of the enclosure).

  6. You worded it better than I did when you said. 'transfer and process.'

Side note: I find that laying the slim flat is the best way to move cooler air throughout the system. (Cold air desends, warm air rises)

Working on older style heat pumps taught me that having cool air moving from the bottom/sides and right out the top will prolong the live of the unit. And these days you wont find a single unit that hasn't incorporated that principle in one form or the other,
    in their units.

So if you have the shelf space, and plenty of open space for venting outwards from the top. I suggest doing so. If not then be sure to leave plenty of space for exausting the hot air away from the side of the system.

    thanks aga in electro!

    I was thinking....

Lets say you have Call of Duty....& its downloaded to your hard drive.when you start up the game the console makes some noise as it reads & spins the disc...

then the console quiets down after the disc is no longer needed to run the game.

when you play online the console begins to make some more noise ( Fans etc )..

Since the disc is no longer being used.. Then am I correct in thinking the " disc reading laser " is not being used? if its not being used then it would not be under stress & strain right?

I geuss what im trying to get at is.... Some of the common issues I hear about have to do with over worked laser's & disc drive etc etc So if you are barely using the laser & disc drive, then is the work load / stress simply on the fans & other parts of
then console? if that's the case... I haven't heard of many wide spread issues with other parts in the console (fans & disc drive & laser aside.)

Which makes me a happy man if thats the case lol

  9. If the game is loaded to the hard drive, then the optical drive is being used... For lack of knowing exactly.. I'll say. Far less than if it wasn't loaded to the Hard Drive.

One thing I have learned over the years, is that the 360 Slims optical drive, which if memory serves is a Lite-On, is one tough cookie in so far as the laser is concerned.

I have 10 Original Xbox's and the optical drives on them wear out pretty quick so I am constantly looking for other xbox's for cheap. But (Knock on Wood) the 360 Slims Optical drive, and I have had my Slim for around 5 years with over 130 games for it, and
counting. It's never not read a readable disc.

Thus in my opinion. Yes, when games are loaded to the HDD then the work load / stress is then placed on the fans & other parts of the console and not so much on the optical drive itself. But I have no way of directly, nor indirectly confirming this.

Also, even if you don't load the game to the HDD, the brunt of the workload on other components GPU/CPU/Motherboard/etc is still the same. Again, IMO!

  11. I have no idea how much power the 360 puts off during online, offline, digital games or physical games. I know it seems to put off more heat if it's a physical game.

So I've come up with another question...

    |《 TV 》|

    |[]|=============|[]|

    ---(drawer)---

    |[]|=============|[]|

    \/ \/

    \/ \/

    \/____XBOX____\/

    \/______________\/

    \/ \/

    ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: <--- carpet floor.

so this is where my 360 slim lives. basicly its a large wood desk/tv stand.. The TV sits on the top & just under that is a pull out drawer. Then its a big open space betweem the bottum of the drawer to the "bottum shelf" that is roughly 2" thick.. The bottum
of the shelf is about 4" off of the carpet floor. There are 4 wood legs that hold the desk together *(one leg on each corner..3" square posts..) other than that its completely open.

SO! my washer & dryer are on the same floor level of the house as my xbox..., and actually about 5ft away with a wall between.

my washer can get a bit vicious and create some hefty vibrations. It's rather intense sometimes & shakes the TV stand & honestly shakes the rest of the house lol

SO AM I PARINOID / REDICULOUS for turning my xbox off until the vibration has stopped?

I geuss I get worried that the intense vibrations could cause damage to the xbox if it were on.... anyone have any comments/imput?

I'll admit I can be pretty rediculous at times... after playing my xbox I let it cool & then I cover it with a T-shirt to protect the vents & fans from dust & dog hair etc

  14. I would contend that you're safe. Looking over your diagram you have space above the console open. So hot air exhausting upwards is being expelled properly IMO.

"PARINOID / REDICULOUS" - IMO: No, an once of prevention... U get the idea.

However covering the vents when the system is off IMO; won't do a bit of good. It's air being circulated through the system by the fan which WILL draw in dog hair, dust etc which will then form dust bunnies inside the system which can cause electronics to
    overheat.
