How does Alternate Port selection Work?

I've finally succeeded in getting RDR2O to work on my XB1!

I was getting disconnected every few minutes. After trying all R*'s fixes, I just went back to Modem/Router setting of UPnP enabled.

I don't understand the importance of the Alternate Port. I had it using port 3074 during port forwarding as suggested by R*, that did not work. When I left port forwarding behind, I would select an alternate port and try it. Sometimes it allowed me a stable
connection, sometimes not. I began picking a port like 55244 and when it was successful I would check the port again at the end of my session. I found that the port changed to a different port by itself. This somehow did not make me lose connection.

Can anyone help me understand this? Why is the port selection so important?

Alternate multiplayer port
selection: Under Network settings, Advanced settings there's a new button labeled
Alternate port
selection. For home networks where UPnP is problematic or unavailable and where multiple
Xbox consoles are present, customers can now
select an alternate port for multiplayer and chat to use.

Basically in short, if you have multiple Xbox consoles, you can select a different port to each console. This is used if port forwarding is not.

You may have to get more basic.

So this alternate port is there to make sure my 3 xb1's do not interfere with each other during multiplayer?

So multiplayer and chat are the only parts using this port?

Try going into settings> Network settings> Advanced settings and the alternate port selection. Put into manual and choose one of the two last ports. That worked out for me, i hope it does with you aswell

Go to Network settings click advanced then go into alternate port selection and manually choose a new port. It usually works.

The default port on my Xbox One S is 3074. In xbox settings, network settings, advanced you can manully change ports in alternate port selection. They are 52456, 52686, 52916, 53416, and 53376.

I would start with the default port, or automatic selected port, set it on your Spectrum first, and try each one, one at a time. If one doesnt work, I would personally just to not have an open port, close the ones that do not work, and only use the one that does.
