How do you turn off the forced system updates while online?

Two days in a row, I have been forced into a system update mid game session, with the only other option being to decline the update and stay offline. This shit was common a couple of years back and I'm not thrilled with it's return. I'd like to know if you can turn it off (i.e. exclusively do updates on console start up).

    Xbox One data usage

The first thing to do is turn off Instant On if it is enabled. That way nothing will be getting downloaded while the console is off. Not system or game updates,

Now this will allow you a little more freedom. System updates are going to be required if you want to game online, as will obviously the game updates. However if you simply want to play the single player portion of a title, you can forgo both system and game
    updates and remain offline.

    Save deleted

So you just turned off the system while still in the game? You could have accidentally turned it off while the game was saving. Which in almost all games it says "Do not turn the system off while saving".

can you download xbow One S updates to your laptop and transfer the update to your xbox latter

There is an offline system update tool where you can go online and download the system update to a USB drive and then bring that drive and plug it into your xbox and hold down a couple buttons while turning it on and it will do the update that way.

This tool is more for people that have problems with their systems not updating correctly through the normal means but I do not see why this would not work in your situation too.

Here is a link to how to download this and instructions on how to do the update:
