How do you gift a digital game you have already purchased?

I have searched high and low and cannot find a definitive answer to this situation.

I preordered a digital edition of a game. I want to preorder that same game for my friend as a digital gift. Supposedly, I should be able to find a "Give Game as Gift" option either on the Microsoft Store on my computer, or through the Microsoft Store on
Xbox.

Nowhere do I see this option.

It just tells me I have already purchased the game on the Microsoft Store on my computer and on the store on Xbox. I am at the end of my rope, I just want to purchase this game for my friend for his birthday.

How do I gift a digital copy of a game I have already purchased?

Have you tried the website store.

Go to www.xbox.com or www.microsoft.com and search for the game in question , and you should see buy as gift.

In my example, I own digital copy of Control, bit on page, i can purchase as gift. This may not be available for all games....

Not all games can be gifted digitally per - https://support.xbox.com/games/purchasing/help-for-issues-when-gifting-digital-xbox-game.
If the product page does not have a "Buy as Gift" option, it can't be gifted.

As far as i know, if you've already done the purchase, its linked to your account. Not all games are gift-able, but the ones that are, you'll have an option under the purchase section to gift. im not sure you can gift after you've already purchased.

At the moment there isn't a option to gift games like that. Best option would to buy a xbox gift card and send it there way. I would think that would be better solution.
