how do I see if a profile if getting Xbox Live?

If Fortnite is working you’re good to go. Like with Netflix and other services, you lose access to those titles when you terminated game pass.

1) Xbox Live and Game Pass a separate subscriptions.

2) You don't need an Xbox Live membership to access Netflix.

How do I know a game is an "online game"? I really don't pay any attention at all to the Xbox except when they need help.

They play Fortnite. That's online, right? So it's working?

Looking at it some more I think it's cuz I canceled Game Pass and went to Live Gold a few months ago and now the Game Pass games don't launch but give some cryptic error about signing in as original (unspecified) user.

Again, when in a profile I really need a "no service", gold, GamePass icon.

Yeah, if they can play Fortnite, then their account seems to be recognizing the Xbox Live subscription. Even though Fornite is a free-to-play game, it still requires an Xbox Live membership.

Yes, I can certainly see the master account has valid Xbox Live but I wanted to see some indication my kids were getting it. They're all set up in the "family", I just need a quick way to verify they're getting live via that master account. Something like
a "number of bars" indicator on a cell phone, or the lit up light showing the model is connected to the Internet. Or lacking that does "chat" need Live"? If they can chat with Xbox friends, are they connected?

But it would be great to see some visual indication when you're logged in with a particular profile like none, silver glow, golden glow, and something for Game Pass.

On the Xbox One, if your account has Xbox Live and you set it as the home, then any account that signs in on that console should also have access to Xbox Live.

If you are not sure whether the child account is picking up the subscription, then you could try signing into their account and trying to play any online game / mode.
