how do i reset my gamertag to the old format xbox uses two gamertags for me

Thank you for taking the time to post this on the Xbox Forums. We understand that you are inquiring about how to change the way your Gamertag appears.

At this time, there is no way to remove this. This was all in part of the new Gamertag system that was implemented a while back.

The thing is me and my brother share our old xbox currently with two separate gamertags so we are used to buying DLC that we can both use and i want to get another xbox for myself but i dont want to buy DLC twice for his gamertag on the old xbox and mine
on the new xbox (which will be the my gamertag that was the old xbox)

On top of this, when I go to try and exchange my gamertag again, it has my old one. When I click the Xbox logo in the top left, it resets the page and has my new gamertag for a second then goes back to my old one. When I try to change to my new gamertag it then wants me to pay for it. What do I do?

But the gamertag that I want to change is my old gamertag. I change my old gamertag on 2 August 2020. I used that old gamertag when I create my Xbox account. At that time, the system allow me to use that gamertag. But when I want to change it back, the system don't allow me to use it. Why is this like that?

It depends on if the game is already capable of supporting the "new" Gamertag format.

Xbox changed the Gamertag system a few months ago, to allow multiple people to have the "same" Gamertag, similar to names on Discord or Battle.net, by adding a number to it.

Newer games, that already support the new Gamertag format, will only show your new name, without the #number to your friends.

Older games, that do not support the new Gamertag format, will show your old Gamertag for a while.
