Im having problems with my Microsoft account and with the Microsoft family. I want to play Game Pass games on my PC, but I need consent from an adult in my family, even though I'm not part of a family group, and my Microsoft account is old enough to play 18+ games. I have gone through the effort of setting up a new Xbox account with a Microsoft account that is basically brand new, and it still blocks my game from opening.

Thank you for the update, Adriaan.

Since you were able to play GTA on a different desktop while signed into your main Microsoft and Xbox account, that definitely points to something specific with your main Windows profile rather than your Microsoft account.

One thing you can try is continuing to use your main Microsoft account on the desktop where the game works. You’ll still be able to access your Game Pass library and launch the game — all your progress and access stays tied to your Microsoft account, not the Windows profile itself.

It’s also possible that there are some deeper system-level restrictions on your main desktop user — maybe something like group policies or registry settings — but I’m not too sure about the exact steps to check or reset those. If the workaround works for now, at least you can keep playing while avoiding that block.

    Thanks for trying to help.

I have checked all the things you told me to check, and everything is in order. My birthday is correct, and I would be old enough to play 18+ games, and I am not a part of a Family group for either of my accounts.

But when I try to launch the game, a Family Safety window starts and blocks the game from continuing. I have also asked the adult in my old family group to give me access to the game; they did, but the pop-up still blocks the game.

I wanted to get the game on Game Pass cause it's free, and Game Pass is only $1 for 14 days now, but I think I might spare myself and just buy it on Steam.

I have tried to change my settings, and my main acount desktop is set as Administrator and under the Family section, I am set as an Organiser.

I have been trying to launch the game from the Xbox app, from shortcuts, and the game files, but it still gets blocked.

I have also tried doing the 3rd point, but to no success.

I have also downloaded the family app, and it says that I'm alone in a family group and am the organiser; however, I cannot change any settings to filter out 18+ games.

I tried playing GTA on my other account's desktop, while being signed into my main account for Xbox and Microsoft Store, and I could play the game. It's just with my main account desktop where stuff seems to be weird.

Thanks again for trying to help. I will continue and try things that will let me play on my main account with the advice you gave me.

Hello, and thanks for getting in touch. I'm Aileen, and I'm here to provide you with advice as an Independent Advisor. Please be reminded that I cannot access or modify your account because this is a public forum.

Adriaan, I hear you — this kind of age restriction issue with Game Pass games like GTA V can be really frustrating, especially when you’re using an account that should already meet the age requirements. Let’s go over why this might be happening and what you can do to fix it.

Step 1: Double-check the age on your Microsoft account

Even if your Microsoft account is old, the system goes by the birthdate on file, not when the account was created.

    To check it:

    Go to account.microsoft.com/profile

Sign in and look at the Date of birth listed

If it still shows you as under 18, that’s why you’re seeing this block

If the birthday is incorrect, it can only be changed once — or you’ll need to use a verified adult account to manage permissions.

Step 2: See if you’re part of a Microsoft Family group

Even if you didn’t set one up yourself, sometimes accounts get placed into one by mistake.

    Check here:

    https://family.microsoft.com

Sign in and see if your account shows up under a child profile

If it does, you’ll need to either:

Remove yourself from the family using an adult account, or

Request that the adult permit you to play mature-rated games

If you aren’t part of any family group but are still being treated like a minor, it’s usually because of the age on your account.

Step 3: Trying with a new Microsoft account

Even if you created a brand new account, if the birthdate on that account is under 18 — or if it somehow got placed into a family group — it will still block games like GTA V.

    Make sure that new account:

Has a birthdate showing 18 years or older

Isn’t tied to any family group

Has Xbox settings allowing content up to 18+

You can adjust Xbox privacy settings at:

    https://account.xbox.com/Settings

(If the account is treated as a child, it won’t let you adjust settings — another sign it’s still restricted.)

    What you can do next:

If you find you’re part of a family, ask the adult organizer to either:

Remove your account from the group, or

Change your permissions to allow mature-rated content

Or, if you’re not in a family but your birthdate is wrong, update it if possible

If nothing works, consider creating a fresh Microsoft account with a correct 18+ birthdate, and confirm it’s not added to any family group

Let me know what you find in your account profile and settings. I can guide you through the right steps depending on what’s showing there. Please let me know if you need any further assistance. Looking forward to your response.

Since you’ve confirmed that your birthdate is correct, you’re not part of any family group, and you've already had a former family organizer grant permission — but Family Safety still blocks the game — this sounds like a persistent background restriction tied to Windows settings or cached Family Safety data.

    Here’s what I recommend next:

    1. Fully remove any remaining Family Safety settings

Even after leaving a family group, some local restrictions can linger.

    Try this:

Go to Settings > Accounts > Family & other users

Make sure your account is listed as an adult or a standalone user

If there's still a “Microsoft family” label, remove yourself or switch to a local account temporarily to test

    2. Check the Family Safety app (if installed)

Open Microsoft Family Safety on your PC or phone

Make sure no restrictions are still applied under “Screen time” or “App limits”

If your old family settings still show up, remove yourself again

    3. Clear Game Pass and Xbox app data

There could be cached restrictions still in the Xbox App:

Sign out of the Xbox app and Microsoft Store

    Restart your PC

Sign back in using only the adult Microsoft account you want to use

    4. Try launching the game from the Xbox App (not Start menu)

Sometimes launching directly from the Xbox App > Library bypasses Family Safety restrictions, especially for Game Pass titles

If none of this works and Family Safety still blocks the game, then yes — buying it through Steam may be the better move. Steam handles age restrictions differently and doesn’t apply Family Safety layers the way Microsoft does.

Let me know if you want help with clearing the app cache or checking if Steam’s version might share progress. Update me if this works or not for you.
