Why won’t my monitor run 1440p 120hz on Xbox Series X?

Yeah I’ve seen people saying that but why am I able to play with 1080p at 120hz then?

And how do I check too see if my monitor can run at exactly 120hz?

    120hz

    for 120hz you need i think hdmi2.1.

besides connecting the s at 120hz is not going to magically let it run at 120fps, you will be lucky to get 40fps on most games. kills my eyes running so slow.
HDMI 2.1 is only needed if you plan to game at 4K for 120hz , on a 4K 144hz monitor, However there's no gaming monitors available at the moment, that yet has HDMI 2.1, the first HDMI 2.1 monitors that are likely to come in are around the same time as the
    Series X (Q4) launch or early 2021 (Q1),

1080p and some 1440p monitors can do 120hz over HDMI 1.4 if it's supported, but best ideally is HDMI 2.0 for 1440p for 120hz,

    HDMI 2.0 can do 1080p / 1440p at 120hz and 4K at 60hz,

    HDMI 2.1 can do 1080p / 1440p / 4K at 120hz.

For the Xbox Series X, it best to get a 4K TV or monitor that supports 120hz and has HDMI 2.1, to get the full potential out of the Series X.

Xbox Series X HDMI 2.1 Cable

Hi , i have a similar issue but not the same. My monitor can support up to 144hz but i cant see anywere of the console is running at 120hz. Ive checked the menu for the monitor and its saying 60hz . But when i switch to my pc on the same monitor it say
    120hz.

I have recently brought a 165hz monitor to use with Xbox series s but I cannot turn on 165hz

    Hi,

What is the make and model of the monitor?

Unlike a TV, PC gaming monitors do not need to conform to TV timing standards. The 165Hz refresh is for connecting to a PC via a display port cable. So you can ignore that.

As for 120Hz, the monitor needs to support exactly 120Hz over HDMI to work with an Xbox console. Many older monitors do not do this (they have non standard timings like 119.88Hz). This is not an issue with a PC because a PC will just run whatever the monitor is capable of. Consoles need exact timings.

2k with 120hz XBOX ONE X not working with HP X27i

Yes I'm there and the Game is for 2k. So that is not the problem.

My Xbox One X will not accepted the Setting "1440p with 120hz" with my HP X27i Monitor. Do you now that issue ?
With a lot of monitors, the lower the resolution, the higher the refresh rate you can have.

Near as I can tell, that monitor has a native refresh rate at 1440p of 60Hz (that is what it defaults to)...it then uses Variable refresh rate to bump it up higher. As noted above, the EDID fails as the Xbox needs a 120Hz setting to run at 120Hz. The monitor will definitely do 120Hz via HDMI but only on a PC/Laptop it seems.

I can't confirm it but I suspect that the monitor's native RR for 1080p is 120Hz.

This has been an issue for quite a few HP models, both whilst using the One X and also whilst using the newer Series X/S's
