How do I know if the install requires internet

If you're searching for digital games then internet is required for installation. Any update for a game also requires internet to update. If you are getting a disc based game then you simply need to set the console to offline mode to install and play

The disk is only a place holder it triggers the download as the game is huge

since your game requires an update to be installed, I would recommend you to double check your internet connection and contact your ISP if you are facing internet connection problems on other of your internet enabled devices.

and may I also know how do you play the game, with a disc or internal hard disk. if it is the disc, there may be some scratches on the disc, which might be the cause of the issue.

I have experienced it once. If that happens it's best to uninstall/remove the partial install. Disconnect the console from the internet do a full power cycle and start the installation from disc. When the installation from the disc is fully complete please
reconnect the console to the internet. Upon starting the game it will likely require a download of an update.

All games, disc or digital, are required to be installed for a myriad of reasons. They range from 1 GB to over 40 GB's depending on the game. You do not need internet for these installs and they are different than updates or patches which will be installed
separately and DO require the internet. Hope that answers your questions. Need for Speed and Fifa are in the 15 - 25 GB range.
