    How do I investigate cause of frequent disconnects?


    PROBLEM:

    While playing multiplayer games on XBox One X I get “disconnected.” Primarily, the problem I have right now is with Divintity: Original Sin 2. I am hosting a game and have one friend join. Usually, within 5 to 10 minutes I get a message “Player has left!”.
    Sometimes my friend can rejoin. Other times, the game is not available, in which case in the “Connectivity Menu” I do not see the option to add a player. If I toggle the option to open the game to friends or invite-only, I get the error “Changing XBox Live
    settings failed” sometimes with “(0x0001)” on the end. I work around the problem by signing out and back into XBox Live. The option to add players comes back and my friend is able to join - at least for a few minutes till it happens again.

    Everything looks fine in network tests. I have refreshed the XBox cache. I have bounced the router.

    As another test, I tried Destiny 2. I get a “Disconnected from Destiny servers” at about the same frequency - but Destiny recovers the connection on its own within a minute.

    Fairly often I see freezing in video calls and stalling of web page access on computers using the same internet connection. Speed tests consistently report bandwidth of 150 to 300 Mbps. I suspect that my ISP is the cause but how can I determine that?

    Frequent disconnects

    For a wired connection that is frequently disconnecting I would suggest checking the wire itself. Sometimes a kink in it, a bad or old wire can cause disconnects or if the wire is long. The longer the signal has to travel sometimes it gets very weak. I have
    experienced this before, even with a good wire, long distance was causing a disconnect very frequently. For wireless it would be probably due to your signal strength based on how far away your console is from the the wireless router.

    Do you have the ability to connect your XBOX 360 via a wired Ethernet cable directly to the modem to see if this still causes you to disconnect frequently? This is to help us narrow down the cause of the problem.

    even if the solder joints break, they can still make contact and it can work. But for those who see frequent "disconnects" of their controller, this is likely the cause.
