How do I get out of the "system update stopped" screen on the 360 every butto. I press does ...

I don't get the same problem as you but kind of similar. My Xbox one X turns itself on randomly and also suggest stopped doing anything when the A button is pressed on the home screens. It recognizes that you pressed the button, it just doesn't do anything.
If you hold the button down it might recognize it eventually. It does this with every controller I have so it's not the controllers.

I never even played the game that it was updating off of, and I can't even get to the dashboard screen to delete anything.

As soon I turn it on and it goes past the xbox 360 screen it goes right to the Update stopped screen and shows the status code and it does nothing.

If you are getting one of these long error codes, please attempt to manually update your console: visit

support.xbox.com/.../system-updates to get the files and steps, transfer the update to a storage device, insert this into the console, navigate to Memory options, highlight HDD and press "Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X, Left Bumper, Right Bumper, X", accept
the prompt, and let the console restart and update. Does this help you out?

Let's start with your HDD. Do you know if it is an official Microsoft HDD? Also, what region would you be located in?

If you haven't already, I would also make sure you have tried updating your console software.

Let us know, and we can move forward from there.

Try reinstall the system update. Before you do so, please make sure you HDD has space left. You may also want to make sure there are no corrputed files on your HDD. Corrupted contents would be marked with an exclamation mark.

How to roll back:

Go to System Settings and select Storage.

On your controller, press the following button sequence:

(This will remove a portion of the system update installed on your console).

Press the left bumper.

Press the right bumper.

Press the X button.

Press the left bumper.

Press the right bumper.

Press the X button.
