How Do I Get 5.1 Surround Sound To Work On My Xbox Series S

I’m trying to get my Series S to work on my 5.1 surround sound system and not having any luck. This set of instructions

Says to use an optical cable, the Series S doesn’t have an optical socket. I’ve looked everywhere for an answer but no one online seems to know how to get it working and when you go to settings for sound the only option is “HDMI Audio Stereo Uncompressed” so no way to switch it to 5.1. The Audio Testing menu says my TV set up doesn’t support 5.1 but it worked fine on my old Xbox One using exactly the same HDMI connections. I’ve even found posts on other forums saying it worked fine until an update about a year ago so did Microsoft accidentally junk that function? Any ideas anyone?

what it says The above message is correct unless your TV is REALLY old, you should be able to use HDMI to send 5.1 or Dolby Digital from the TV to surround sound.

what is the make and model of your television and Soundsystem? How exactly are they connected to each other?

Hi. Thank you soi much for your really detailed reply, it's exactly what I needed. I've got all the HDMI cables connected correctly (so that's a relief to find out I'm not a total idiot) but it was the pass through bit I was missing. I'll give it a go and hopefully it'll sort me out.
