How Do I Get 30 Day Trial On Xbox 360?

I created a new account on xbox 360, after adding basic information a message popped up saying i could unlock 30 day trial of xbox live gold, however, i chose to ignore it until i finish making the account. So when i did finish doing so, i tried looking
for the 30 day trial but i could not find it. Instead, it said that i had to pay so thats when i asked a friend who told me to ask Microsoft for help, he also said that they might give me a code or something but im quite new to this. Can someone help?

You have to add the trial when it pops up. There is no way to go back to the trial.
