How do I extend my son's time on his laptop or Xbox in the family safety website?

It works when I get an email request and click the link but if he asks me verbally and I go to the family safety page I can't find an option to temporarily extend the time by x minutes.

I am aware I can permanently extend the time limit but that's not a solution, this is for a one off extension.

    :)

How do I extend my son's time on his laptop or Xbox in the family safety website?

Thanks for your reply, it's not quite what I want to do though.

I want to grant my son a one off extension to either the Xbox or W10 laptop on the family settings mobile website on my android phone in Chrome.

So I know how to change his regular hours but this is a one off extension, so that's not the solution as I don't want his hours extended every week.

He could be playing on the XBox or laptop so the Xbox app presumably won't help with the latter but please let me know if it will.

He is in the middle of the game so he can't request more time by message, he tells me verbally he wants more time and I want to add it on the website.

I have seen people say it used to be an option on the website but it disappeared in an update. I'd like to think Microsoft aren't that bad and they would keep one of the most useful options in the Family software given how important it is for customers with children.

    Thanks

    Hello Lawrence D1,

I believe that even when in game, you should be notified when the screen time is about to end or has ended. Then he should be able to request additional screen time, which you would then approve.

I don't believe there is an option to extend the screen time before the request is made.

    Hi Lawrence D1,

    Greetings!

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

So far, from the details you provided, you can try the following steps and let us know the result. You can just skip those you have done already.

You can schedule day and time slots for how much time a member can spend per day on Xbox consoles and Windows devices.

    1. Open the app, and then select the tile for the member‘s account that you want to set a screen time limit.
    2. Select the Screen time tile.
    3. Under Schedule, you can view the time limits that you’ve set—or those that appear by default—in a grouped or expanded view by using the buttons that are above the list of time ranges.
    4. Select the schedule that you want to change, and choose between the Days of the week, Time limit, or Time range.
      • Days of the week—Select Every day, or just one or more days, to set the days to which the schedule applies.
      • Time limit—Select the drop-down menu to choose from a variety of time limits that increase in 30-minute increments. You can also choose to set certain days to full 24-hour playtime or block those days entirely.
      • Time range—Under From, select the time that a member’s screen time can start. Under To, select the time that a member’s screen time can start. Otherwise, you can select to toggle switch to enable the time range for Anytime. Setting a time range is helpful if you want to set a time limit that only begins in the afternoon or evening. For example, if a member can’t start playing until after school, studying, or before bedtime, you can set the time range within that remaining period of the day.
The app automatically saves these settings for you.

Note Some games, such as free or trial versions, don’t require a signed in account to be played. This means that a child could play this type of game even if they have screen time limits. To block these types of games, organizers can create a guest PIN and set up offline content limits. To learn more about using guest PINs and offline content limits, see:

Set up and manage a guest PIN on your Xbox console

Manage what guests can see on your Xbox console

Grant screen time exceptionsSometimes you may want to grant an exception so that a member of your family group can play for longer. The member can request additional screen time for approval, or you can grant the exception on your own.

Note Unlike a member’s default screen time, one-time exceptions can’t be paused or removed. Exceptions also run parallel to existing screen time. For example, if a child has one hour left in their screen time for the day, and you grant them an additional 1-hour screen time exception, both will expire in one hour rather than two hours.

    To grant an exception:

    1. Open the Xbox Family Settings app, and then select the tile of the member whose screen time you want to adjust.
    2. Select the Screen time tile, and then under “Activity” select Add time now. You’ll be prompted to choose between various incremental times or allow screen time for the remainder of the day.

How is my child playing over the time that I allowed? If you’ve adjusted the screen time allowance for your child, or another member in your family group, they may be approving extra screen time for themselves. If the child knows your Microsoft account password, or they have access to the mobile device that receives the screen time requests, they can approve the additional screen time without your knowledge.

To avoid this, make sure that members don’t have access to an organizer’s account or the device.

To learn more about securing your account to prevent unauthorized access, see:

Add security info to your Microsoft account

If this doesn’t seem to be the case for your family group, please report this instance by using the Feedback option in our app:

    1. Open the Xbox Family Settings app, and then go to Settings.
    2. Scroll down and select Feedback.
    3. Select I’m having trouble with the app, and then follow the on-screen instructions to tell us more about your issue.
