How do I choose the right 1440p monitor for series X?

The timings are extremely important. As far as I'm aware it needs to be exactly 120Hz. Not all 1440P screens are HDMI 2.1, but this does not matter as 1440P (2560x1440) uses less video bandwidth and therefore HDMI 2.1 is not required.

Firstly ignore the refresh rate marketing. These 170Hz, 165Hz or even 240Hz as these are only over Display Port when the monitor is connected to a PC. This brings about the second point, that being PCs. Monitors are sold largely on their abilities for PC gaming. Even the latest HDMI displays with HDMI 2.1 don't generally mention consoles. The issue isn't about the 'Hz' it's about the timings.

It's highly likely that the monitors you bought don't conform to the VESA standard for the timings. Let me explain. Xbox want's to see exactly 120Hz, however your monitor might not do exactly 120Hz over HDMI. Over HDMI it might be an odd figure like 119.88Hz or it could just be 100Hz. These refresh rates and timings are not an issue with a PC graphics card. A PC will just output whatever the monitor wants/supports. It's not quite so with consoles. With consoles, the monitor needs to support what the console supports, otherwise, no dice.

That being said, there are loads of reviews of monitors that have been tested to be fully working with Xbox Series X and S consoles. You need to seek these out rather than just buying any monitor you find online or in a store.

Unless space is an issue, it's probably just better to buy a modern 120Hz HDMI 2.1 TV.

Thank you for your response, yes I understand your answer it’s down to the timings of the monitor that it work on the console. If I give you an example I’m currently looking at the LG UltraGear 27GP850-B. Am I right in saying this will be compatible at 1440p 120hz? Also the timings in the manual does it have to be exactly 120hz, I see some that are listed higher than 120hz but not 120hz exactly?

The Xbox Series X will do 120Hz but no more, regardless of resolution or monitor.

I would check to see if other Xbox Series X owners have confirmed to achieve 1440p120Hz on those monitors before purchasing.

Maybe a google of "xbox series x 1440p 120hz ___________ " and insert the monitor model to see if people have posted about their monitor and Series X working.
