How can I get a refund for a redeemed gift code?

Can the person who bought it then atleast get a refund?

Not if the code was already redeemed, no.

Gifted codes are only refundable if they havent yet been redeemed

If your friend already redeemed the code then you wont be able to unfortunately. Gifted items are only eligible for a refund if it hasn't already been redeemed.

Unfortunately it's a scam that Microsoft and others seem to be profiting from.

Virtually all gifts will be redeemed by the person receiving the gift (It's a gift - of course you are going to redeem it) but if they then find they can't run the product (older hardware, for example or the wrong product (as you've discovered), although it would be easy for Microsoft to cancel the gift, because it's linked to a Microsoft account, they won't.

Your only option is to try to get your money back via your credit card (if you can) and learn not to send gifts via the store in future.

That being said, PC game stores seem to deal with this a lot better.

That is not how the gift system works. If the recipient already has the game or doesn’t want it
the recipient can give the code to someone else to redeem. Or, they can ask you to
