  1. How can a Parent separate Microsoft Account data/progress from aging child?

I have seen this somewhat answered in many forums, but doesn’t meet my circumstances or make sense. I am trying to separate data from a Microsoft Account (aka RED) that is shared between myself the parent (aka Alpha) and my son (aka Beta). Due to his massive progress/history on games and my lack of progress/history it makes sense to give him the RED account and for me to create a new Microsoft Account (BLUE). Some background facts:

    1. The “primary alias” on RED is currently my (Alpha) Yahoo mail account (BROWN) and my mobile phone number (TAN).
    2. My 2021 Office 365 subscription (YELLOW) is connected to the legacy Microsoft Account (RED) and expires in 1 month. I assume Office 365 is not connected to the the Microsoft Account itself and not the primary alias.
    3. There are 4 PCs devices (Pink) running Office 365 from RED
    4. There are 3 Xbox consoles (since 2017) connected to RED
      • Xbox One (Violet) – my (Alpha) residence
      • Xbox One (Lavender) – my (Alpha) residence
      • Xbox One (Purple) – my son’s (Beta) primary residence
    5. The initial “gamertag” (PURPLE) created was mine (Alpha) but was subsequently taken over by my son (Beta). I then created a new “gamertag” (ORANGE) with almost no progress to date. All of my son’s (Beta) progress is on gamertag PURPLE.
    6. There is an Xbox Live Gold account (GOLD). I assume this is connected to the Microsoft Account (RED), not the primary alias (BROWN/TAN) or the “gamertag” (PURPLE) but I need confirmation on how this works.
    7. There are over 70 games connected to RED
      • I (Alpha) own 20 games (Teal) that my son (Beta) doesn’t play
      • My son (Beta) owns 50 games (GREEN) that I (Alpha) don’t play
      • After split, I would like to divide TEAL and GREEN games between us but don’t know if the TEAL games can be transferred from the original Microsoft Account (RED) to a new Microsoft Account (BLUE)
    8. My son’s (Beta) Minecraft account through Microsoft is probably also connected to the Microsoft Account (RED) and not the primary alias (BROWN/TAN), gamertag (PURPLE), but I need confirmation on how this works.
    9. My son (Beta) has a mobile phone (BLACK) and Gmail account (WHITE – which will be newly created) for the Microsoft Account (RED).

    My gameplan is as follows:

    1. Let Office 365 (YELLOW) expire on old Microsoft Account (RED)
      1. All PCs (Pink) will no longer be licensed and will request login to active Office 365 Account (to be created in later step below)
    2. Promote my son’s (BETA) new gmail address (WHITE) and phone number (BLACK) to the “Primary Alias” on the legacy Microsoft Account (RED)
    3. Delete the old primary alias (Alpha – BROWN and TAN). CRITICAL NOTE: Online posts state that deleting email/mobile from Microsoft Account is permanent and cannot be recovered and or used again and that these values are wiped out on all servers. If these values are wiped off the servers, how would Microsoft know about these credentials or know to block them from being used to create a new account.
    4. Assumptions based on above:
      1. 2021 Office 365 account (YELLOW) no longer supports any devices
      2. Yahoo email (BROWN) is unaffected, and the address should be available again. If not, can use new gmail address (MAROON).
      3. Original mobile number (TAN) should become available again for use, if not then I have a problem.
      4. All Xbox data/progress unaffected – still functioning in RED off new “primary alias” – assumes related to gamertag (PURPLE)
      5. Minecraft data/progress unaffected – still functioning in RED off new “primary alias” – assumes related to gamertag (PURPLE)
    5. Create new Microsoft Account (BLUE)
      1. Reuse Yahoo address (BROWN) if possible, otherwise newly created gmail address (MAROON) along with original mobile phone (TAN) to create the “primary alias” for this new BLUE account
    6. On Windows PC devices (PINK) add new gmail (Maroon) if (BROWN) cannot be reused
    7. Purchase new 2022 Office 365 Subscription (GRAY)
      1. Log into all Windows PC devices (PINK) with new Microsoft Account (BLUE) primary alias to re-activate Office
      2. If step above doesn’t work, install Office on all devices (PINK)

Can someone who truly understands this (Microsoft MVP or similar) provide insight on if this plan will work?

    :)

Basically both are true as they are referring to the same it's like a bank account, you can change the account number but it's still the same bank account

I can interpret what you are saying several different ways. Please let me know which one is correct:

Interpretation A: Games are linked to the email address it was purchased under, meaning the ‘then’ primary alias of the Microsoft Account, but not the Microsoft Account itself. But, If that email is no longer the primary alias, the games will be linked through the new primary alias email.

Interpretation B: Games are linked to the Microsoft Account and can be accessed by the aliases on the Microsoft Account.

You won't be able to use an email that has already a Microsoft account, during the adding alias process you need to create a new email or add a different one from a different platform but not one you have already use for a Microsoft account, if you change the alias you will keep the progress on games, but as you will be using a new email that's really not transferring content

    Thanks for replying.

So, that means I cannot use Yahoo Email Alpha (BROWN) on the new Microsoft Account (BLUE).

What about the rest of the plan? From what you wrote, it sounds like any game progress on the gamertag Purple is connected to Yahoo Email Alpha Brown. More specifically, if I delete the original primary alias does that mean the game history gets lost, even if a new primary alias is put in place?

Or, does the replacement of the Yahoo Email Alpha Brown with my son's new email (Beta White) as the primary alias enable the saving of game progress/data?

Yes, the data will be still on the new alias email, I understand you since the beginning maybe I wasn't clear on my last reply, just wanted to make sure you understand that you won't be able to add as an alias an email you already created, need to be one created during the adding alias process
