Contact xbox support regarding payment or billing issues.

if you had recurring billing turned on (default setting when paying by card) and there wasn't enough in the account to cover the cost then a past due balance would be incurred. this balance is charged at the price of the last subscription and needs to be
cleared before more purchases can be made..

you may be able to change to a 1 or 3 month subscription to be able to pay the balance by requesting a call back from Support or by using the online Chat by clicking on the
Contact Us button at https://beta.support.xbox.com/contact-us and picking the appropriate categories in the drop down menus (Subscriptions
    and Billing
    > I want to pay a past due balance)

    Hi
    MarleyMarley
    ,

I agree with everything that has been written before me though another option is buy a prepaid card based on how many months you want and put that code in.
this won't work if you have a past due balance.

But if they pay the outstanding balance first and then cancel the next year subscription they can do it by gift card after of that is done :).
