Help - Xbox One Starts Up to Black Screen

I recently performed an update on my Xbox One (original style, not the Xbox One S or Xbox One X) and now the Xbox stalls during startup. It goes through the screen with the green background and the animated Xbox One logo. However, it stalls at a black screen after that. It doesn't matter how long I wait (hours later when it shuts itself off), or if I pull the power plug for minutes at a time and then power it back up. It always goes back to the black screen.

The machine was just fine before this update. I had not used the machine much recently, due to being given an Xbox Series X. My main goal was to transfer my data from the Xbox One to the Series X (via network transfer). However, the Xbox One required an update prior to allowing the transfer. I initially tried to do it without the update (and the Xbox One was working just fine), but the Xbox One prevented it because it had to be connected online before it could transfer. I do not think this is a hardware issue, due to this. It seems to solely lie with the update.

Here is the OS Version from the Troubleshoot panel:

I don't know if that corresponds to the OS Version prior to the update, or after.

I have tried using the Offline System Update tool in the Troubleshoot panel. Using the OSU1 update works just fine, but the same results. The update goes through just fine. However, the machine does the same thing that it did with the original online update. It goes through the green screen and then just sits at a black screen for as long as you allow it.

Is there any way to rectify this and save my data? My whole purpose with this recent venture was to get my data off the Xbox One onto the Series X. Now I can't even use my data on the original machine, let alone move it to the Series X. Any solutions to this?

I have the same problem with my Xbox One. tried a cold boot but start screen comes up then just goes to black screen help

The console reset worked. The Xbox One will now successfully start up. Thank you for the help. I am now off to sync up a bunch of games.

Hi, I hope you're doing great out there despite the issue that you're experiencing. I am an Independent advisor and I am here to help you in regards to your concern.

In this case, we just need to reset your console keeping your games and apps through the Xbox Troubleshooter page. Don't worry because as long as you're connected to Xbox Live your saved progress, games, will not be deleted. It will remove all of your accounts but you can add all of them later on.

Make sure to follow the steps accordingly to access it:

1. Unplug the network cable if you're using a wired network connection.

2. Power off your console, and then unplug the power cord to ensure that the console is completely powered off.

3. Wait 30 seconds, and then plug the power cord back in.

4. Press and hold the Pair button (located on the left side of the console) and the Eject button (located on the front of the console), and then press the Xbox button on the console.

5. Continue holding the Pair and Eject buttons for 10-15 seconds.

6. Listen for two “power-up” tones a couple of seconds apart. You can release the Pair and Eject buttons after the second power-up tone.

When the console powers up, you will see the Xbox Startup Troubleshooter. Please click on "Reset this Xbox" then "Reset and keep my games and apps".

Thank you for the reply. I am willing to give it a try. I looked at the Reset feature in the Troubleshoot screen, but I kind of shied away from it when it listed that it would not keep the Saved Games. I do play almost exclusively while connected to Xbox Live. However, it has been several years since I have had an Xbox Live Gold account. If the cloud sync requires Xbox Live Gold, then I would be out of luck (I think that was how it worked in the Xbox 360 days). Please confirm if the files will be synchronized with just a standard Xbox Live account. The main consideration is the Saved Games files. While my internet connection is pretty darn slow, and it would take forever to re-download the application files, that is much less of a concern.

As long as you’re connected to the Internet when you’re playing your games they’re automatically saved to your cloud and they will just re-sync.

By choosing keep my games and apps you don’t need to redownload any games or apps.
