Help setting up 2nd xbox.

A little different approach regarding the Gold subscription.

If your son is playing on multiple consoles and you yourself are only playing on 1 console then it might be a good idea to have your son's account have a Gold subscription and set your console as his Home console, that would result in your son being able
to play online on any console and you to play online at his Home console (being the console you only game on)

In general, the Home console feature allows Content and subscriptions to be shared across the Home console, so any content or some subscriptions will be available on that console for other profiles.

If the other profiles want to use the content/subscriptions on any other console, they will need access to that content/subscriptions in a different way (like owning it themselves etc.)

If you only want to buy another copy of Rocket League then your best option that I see at this time is to put your Home console on his new Xbox so he can share your other content there and buy Rocket League for him to use on his account on the big TV. That
solves the problem for just that one game though. Your account would have full access to your content on the big TV when you have your profile logged in there.

Sorry that there isn't a better solution. Gold sharing was primarily intended for use on a single console from what I've seen and still allow one to access their content when using other consoles.

While your son would most likely appreciate a new TV, I don't think that will solve your content sharing issue.

Same goes for gold, that's why I second the gold on your son's account suggestion instead of yours. As far as I have understood, you are always on your console while your son is gaming on multiple devices.

He could be the gold owner and set your console as his home. That way you have gold and no matter where he is, and he will have gold available.

Set his console as your home so at home you both have all the games already purchased available. The only drawback of this solution is that when your son is not gaming at home (or on your xbox without you
being signed in), he will not have access to games already bought on your account.

Also be aware that you can change the xbox home only 5 times in a year, so also changing on the fly whenever needed is not an option.

Just suggestions anyway, the best solution really depends on how you will end up using the 2 consoles in "every day routine".

Thank you! That sounds like a great idea! But would he be able to play Rocket League on my console if it was not the home console, and I was not logged in? Even if we bought his own copy, how would Xbox Live work correctly?

For example, right now, Fortnite is not working on his console even though it is free because it says he needs an xbox live account!
