Help me understand server shutdown

Hi I was hoping someone could explain what happens when a publisher or developer shuts down their multiplayer servers. If a games multiplayer offering is available online only does that mean the game loses multiplayer functionality all together? Is there
still a way to play with friends in a private match?

NHL server shutdowns

You will not be able to download roster updates. I am not sure about viewing your online Be A Stats and such. I think it is saved to your HD so you may be able to view it still. Any Roster updates previously downloaded will still be active in your game.

 

From my understanding, say for consoles like xbox. The console auto connects to XBL (Middle man) and depending on the game, connects from xbl to say EA servers where MP aspects of the game runs pretty much like a system link lobby linking 2 or more gamers
together.

Yes, the EA or whatever servers goes down, then the MP aspects of that game no longer functions online.

Yes, if the game say for OG Xbox, or Xbox 360 is system link enabled for 2 or more consoles. Or split screen for single console. Then you can still play MP but only at your residence.

 

I guess having multiplayer functionality is kind of pointless for an eight year old game that nobody is playing anymore. But I just can't justify buying a $60 game with an unspecified expiration date. The majority of multiplayer games coming out have little
to no single player offering and no local multiplayer. I wish xbox one supported system link because I just don't enjoy playing games online with a bunch of foul mouthed strangers.

 

It was a tragedy when SEGA shut down the "Chromehounds" servers and thus put an end to the greatest Team Multiplayer ever created.

Don't be put off by Urban Legend. COD is not full of squeaky teenage jerks.

I've played games with 12 year old gamers who displayed more maturity than people twice or three times their age, even in "Call Of Duty".

Sure jerks still exist but to Activision's credit you can quick mute a nuisance COD player faster than you can swap weapons in game.

 

Man I hated when EA shut down Battlefield 2 Modern Combat. Was best online shooter on 360. Now best shooter is Bad Company 2. IMO

 

Once the servers go out from the developer there is no way to play online.
