Help connecting to university network: using wifi adapter and vpn possible?

HI everyone, I'm a poor university student who just got gifted an xbox one s. Unfortunately my university does NOT allow the connection of game consoles. The university also doesn't allow hardwire internet connections (no ethernet) in dorms or anywhere
else on campus. I have a 2014 used macbook and I was wondering if the following would be possible. If I purchased an external usb wifi adapter and connected it to my macbook, could i create an access point/hot spot through the adapter and then run the VPN
through it so that my console can connect? Would it be possible? This is the only option i can think of until i get back home in December. Please let me know what you guys think. Finding a wifi adapter that supports macos Sierra is easy. But I'm new to
the entire setup of access points/hot spot options.

Also i'm on scholarship and currently where I am in Europe there aren't any nearby stores that sell ethernet cables, the stores only have wifi adapters. (shipping from outside is too expensive) yes i'm in a somewhat rural area and the school is a small
school. So i don't have the local option of connecting my laptop directly through a macbook adapter to an ethernet cable then to the console and running the vpn from the console.

How to Setup a VPN on your Xbox Console

There are many benefits to routing your xbox IP through a VPN connection. This ranges from utilizing exclusive American content, to hiding your IP from DDoSers, or even hiding your location from Doxers. This tutorial will show you a loophole that allows you to get around/avoid these hassles. Let us begin.

Prerequisites:

WiFi Connection
Laptop with LAN port
VPN (Virtual Private Network)
Ethernet Cable

VPN's:

IPVanish
PureVPN
ExpressVPN

This tutorial was done using IPvanish.

Setup VPN on Xbox
One of the methods of setting up Xbox One VPN is by tunneling your service via router and then connecting your gaming console and other devices to the router. Note that the setup may vary according to the router you use and the instructions provided by the VPN provider.

- Use the following steps to configure a VPN service on your router:
- You need an Ethernet cable and connect your modem to the WAN port in the router.
- Open your Router’s Control Panel – accessible from your system control panel.
- Go to the ‘Basic Setup’ / ‘Network’ / ‘Basic’ tab in your router control panel (where you can configure WAN or Internet settings).
- Enter the setup details provided by your VPN provider (username, password, gateway, subnet mask, etc.).
- Select the appropriate protocol settings and the change the ‘Connection Type’ based on your router and VPN providers instructions (usually to PPTP, but it depends).
- Select the appropriate DCHP settings depending on the requirements by your VPN provider.
- Click the Apply Settings / Save / Connect button and you are done.

Now you can connect your Xbox to the router either through Wi-Fi or through Ethernet cable and can enjoy using VPN on your Xbox 360 or Xbox One.

Cannot connect to Xbox live via laptop with university Connection

HI everyone,

I am having trouble connecting my Xbox to Xbox live via my laptop. I have tried both the bridged and the network sharing methord and neither seems to work. When connecting to Xbox Live the test cannot get passed the connecting to network stage, even though
I've tried using multiple cables. I am using a university network with a login process when connecting to the wifi network, which is why I cannot connect my Xbox to the phone line because the IE app needs an Xbox Live connection to function.

If you have already tried all the troubleshooting steps listed in the following link, then there may be a problem with the VPN client.

Please note the information mentioned in solution 7.

"Some VPN clients will disable Teredo connectivity while the VPN client is connected, and some VPN clients that install a network adapter that will disable Teredo until the VPN adapter is removed."

The best thing to do is to remove any trace of the software that allows you to make use of a VPN connection and check if this helps.

What does your router have to do with your university's network?

I assume that when you connect to the university network you only use your PC and not your router. If not, then explain further. Have you previously managed to connect to your university's WiFi network or have you never managed to do so?

The WiFi security settings to use must be provided to you by the management of your university. Can you connect to the internet with your computer through your home WiFi network?

Teredo is a networking protocol that’s used to establish secure communications between clients and servers, and to facilitate connectivity between devices behind routers that use network address translation
(NAT).

Failure to obtain a Teredo IP address can occur when there’s an issue with your Teredo adapter, when a device on your network is blocking the Teredo protocol. Without a Teredo IP address, you’ll be
unable to use party chat or do multiplayer gaming on Xbox Live.

Check to see if Teredo connectivity is blocked when a VPN client is connected, or while a VPN network adapter is installed

Some VPN clients will disable Teredo connectivity while the VPN client is connected, and some VPN clients that install a network adapter that will disable Teredo until the VPN adapter is removed. If you’ve
installed a VPN client and Teredo is still disabled even while the VPN client is disconnected, check to see if you have a network adapter named
TAP-Windows Adapter V9 installed:

Right-click the Start icon, and then select Device Manager.
Select View > Show Hidden Devices.
Select Network Adapters.
Identify any adapters that have a name like TAP-Windows Adapter V9. Right-click the adapter name, and then select
Uninstall.
Note While uninstalling the VPN network adapter should unblock Teredo connectivity, this will also likely cause issues with the VPN client software. If you still require VPN functionality along with Teredo support, refer to the support documentation
for the VPN client.

A VPN network adapter can also cause this issue. Go into Device Manager > Network Adapters and try to remove all the VPN adapters installed and see if it helps
