    Headsets for use in a surround sound setup


    I am looking to replace my stock Xbox headset with one of better quality, however I have a 5.1 surround sound setup that I spent a lot of time setting up and running wires, so I do not wish to replace that with a "Dolby Digital" headset. What does everyone
    use/recommend in this scenario?

    5.1 surround isn't meant for headsets. It's meant for full surround sound speaker setup.

    Well, it is a stereo headset, so unless you are using a surround sound processor, you can't expect pinpoint audio from that headset. Some games use simulated surround encoding that can sometimes feel pretty good. But have a sound sound processor for use
    with a good stereo headset is a much better alternative. If you have a SS processor, make sure your console is set to use bitstream.

    Headset gaming, have you really tried it?

    I have quite a decent surround sound setup so I tend to game with that, unless I am playing multiplayer then headset it is.

    While some headset do use "virtual surround sound" to achieve the effect higher end ones do process multiple speakers in the ear pieces. But having such small speakers in each ear pieces, a true 5.1 or 7.1 speaker setup will always sound better.

    Agreed, I have also gone through multiple headsets since launch.

    Having a 7.1 surround sound setup I too also only want a wireless chat headset not an overpriced all in one unit.

    Xbox One "'STEREO' Headset Adapter" clarity? Stereo or Simulated Surround Sound.

    Based on a couple of information pieces (links below), I think the word "stereo" is mistakenly placed on the headset adapter. I don't have the exact facts and would also like to hear the official word from MS but think about this.. every surround sound
    headset (except for ones with multiple speakers in the ear cups) use a stereo wiring. One wire for the Left speaker and one wire for the Right speaker. These wires come out from a surround sound processor (e.g. Astro Mixamp, TB DSS, etc) before they get
    to speakers in the ear cups. The surround sound processor is what makes the headset a "surround sound" headset. These processors can do the same for ANY headset.

    In the article linked from gamerawr, it states that MS is trying to negate the need for 3rd party audio processors by processing surround sound on the xbox one and feeding it to your headset via the headset adapter. Essentially taking place of a Mixamp,
    DSS, what have you...

    Also, Turtle Beach is labelling their XO series headsets specifically for Xbox One and uses "Cenematic Surround Sound" as a touted feature of these headsets... you know how they connect to the xbox one? Via the headset adapter (included).

    I think it's perfectly feasible to have surround sound coming through the headset adapters. I just hope MS confirms that is the case.
