Headset not working

Hi have the xbox one and headset since launch. This is the first time I tried to use it for ingame chat. I hear nothing from the head set and cannot talk through it. If I hit volume up button a few times I can hear a beap in the headset (signaling max
volume?) I can hit the mute button and I see the light turn on/off. I have updated the controller with the headset. I hear ingame chat through my tv speakers and have kinect microphone for chat turned off. I have noticed that I always have a microphone icon
next to my gamer tag (even though i have kinect chat off and no headset plugged in) Any ideas to get it to work

Thanks for the link xenomorph. After i followed it my headsets mute light started to flash. its still not working, but at least its doing something. I will probably give microsoft support a call and see what they tell me. Thanks again for the help.
