Headset adapter question- what's compatible?

I went into gamestop and looked at the adapters, and the associate told me that I should be careful since the adapter will only work with certain types of headphones. I have a pair of headphones that are used for music but also has a mic on it. However,
it was not designed for gaming. I'm wondering if this is worth it to purchase or not, so I would like to know if there is some sort of list that shows compatible headphone/mics for the headset adapter. Thanks in advance!

Ok, 1st question. Have you updated your controllers firmware with the headset plugged in?

Another question, have you toggled the mute button to make sure you don't have yourself muted?

Turtlebeach Ear Force XO Four

So I've been trying to research XBONE headsets. I've always had a Turtlebeach. So now i'm reading up on their site and part of the instructions says you need to update the controller with the stereo headset adapter. That's fine. So i'm looking what's
included in the box of these new headsets and they don't seem to include the stereo headset adapter...so i want to confirm...everyone will need to buy this $25 adapter in order to use a headset not made by MS???

What kind of headphones do you have? I believe most will work for game audio when plugged into the headset adapter but you'll likely have to purchase a mic as many inline mics will not work. Here is the one I got and have been pretty happy with:

@ Lofty Who - Sony is including a headset with every PS4 and it will be compatible with old headsets without buying an adapter. What is Microsoft's excuse?

Can you explain what wiring is needed to use game chat/ party chat with this headset. Ive contacted the manufacturer and they said to contact you.

As far i know almost all standart Headsets are using mono-microphone.

What headset are you using?

Be aware that there are two standards of headset plugs called CTIA and OMTP. On both standards, the Microphone and ground connector on that plug are reversed.

For a headset to work properly, the headset connector has to be a CTIA standard plug. If your headset is a phone headset (e.g. Apple or some older Android or Nokia compatible headsets), then they use the OMTP standard, and won't work properly.

If you do have an OMTP compatible headset, simply buy a CTIA to OMTP adapter (or since the adapter simply crosses two wires, it is automatically an OMTP to CTIA adapter as well). Also, since the adapter only crosses two wires, these adapters should be dirt
cheap. If a store asks you to pay for this adapter more than you'd pay for a Coffee to Go, you're being ripped off.
