    Headphones and Home Theater


    I am going to start by describing the behavior of my PS5 to better understand what I am looking for with my Series X. I have my consoles running through an AVR for home thater surround sound. I recently decided to get headsets for gaming at night. I bought the Pulse 3D headset for the PS5. When I turn the headset on it stops the audio going to my home theater and when I shut them off the sound comes back out of the speakers again.

    I also was gifted the Xbox Stereo Headset and found out via the website that plugging into the controller will not mute the HDMI audio as the controller does not know if your using it for chat or everything. So I called Xbox support to try for a quivk answer and they claim the Xbox does have this feature with the right headsets. I remebered reading a discussion about the Arctis 7x that the USB dongle will not automatically mute other sound either. So I decided to buy a headset that connects wireless direct but of course that behaves no differently.

    So I know I can just mute my AVR but I wanted to see if I am missing something or the Xbox just simply cannot do that? When the headset is on, the HDMI audio options go grayed out and my AVR switches from Atmos to PCM. When I turn them off the AVR goes back to Atmos. Either way the sound never stops playing theough the AVR when I turn the headphones on.

    Do I need an HDMI headphone or is the only option simply mute the AVR? Seams silly have both play at the same time with no option to change it.

    So, if I understood correctly you basically want to use 7.1 in your headphones + party chat when the home theater option isn't available? (At night)

    Did you download the Dolby Access app? While you only need to pay for use with headphones, you may be able to set up Atmos for home theaters with the app.

    The Xbox audio settings I have available are as follows:

    HDMI audio:

    * Stereo Uncompressed

    * Dolby Digital

    * Dolby Atmos for Home Theater

    Headset Format:

    * Stereo Uncompressed

    * Windows Sonic for Headphones

    * Dolby Atmos for Headphones

    * DTS Headphone:X

    Tried all of them. Nothing helped.

    I have a pair of PX5's and they leave my $800 home theater system for dead. The only time my home theater gegts used anmore is when there's other people watching too.

    As a home theater enthusiast I can attest that I switched to headphones for awhile (Astro A40). What I learned, there is no "surround sound" in headphones, period. The sound was great and I enjoyed cranking it up but it was still left and right (no true
    front/rear or up/down). No comparison to surround sound systems.
