Is it me or does using the X1 for TV with the pass through bring picture quality way down. I have direct tv and have always had great hd quality, but ever since I got the x1 the picture looks very grainy. Thoughts?

I wouldn't call it upscaling going from 1080i to 1080p, but de-interlacing or I/P conversion. The one in the Xbox One might be pretty decent courtesy of AMD, and better or worse than the one in the display itself.

Poor I/P conversion may attempt to hide its flaws by softening the picture to hide feathering artifacts, or become soft as a consequence of reverting to bobbing rather than weaving fields. Of course, bobbing can be seen as a form of upscaling.

But if things look better through the Xbox One even with things that have a full 50 or 59.94 Hz motion portrayal plus fast movement, like broadcast sports, then I'm a bit skeptical. For things that have a 23.976 or 25 Hz motion portrayal, I would imagine
the Xbox One does I/P conversoin pretty well.

Makes me wish I had an Xbox One so I could put it through its paces... HDMI pass through :)

Anyone know if this (passive hdmi pass through) was addressed in the recent update? My wife has threaten to cut me off if I hook the cable box back up to the Xbox. Easy choice for me.

With a Comcast STB it looks identical, I did stop using it as not being able to easily control the DVR is an issue. Though I may pick up a splitter this weekend as there are times when I want to take a break from a game but not necessarily quit the XOne.

  6. I have the same issue here in Canada

I had to plug my cable decoder direct to my TV because the picture quality was really bad in passtrough

    I'm using a DCX700 decoder

I did some research on google and there seems to be a lot of people with this issue

I like the function -dvr controls but I guess I'll disconnect until a fix comes out. Definitely think the whole Chanel changing dvr stuff needs a lot of work.

Have DTV (Genie box) and have not seen any of these issues.

Additionally, here is a quote from an engineer working on the TV side of the One interface:

"On a side note: Using HDMI 2.0 (or high speed 1.4) of a good quality is very highly recommended. It has solved more issues than I care to comment on. Very inexpensive or old HDMI cables can lead
    to a very poor experience"

Very disappointed in the pass-through feature. I use Verizon Fios and have problems recognizing the box and sometimes the sound drops and the picture starts blinking on and off. The One Menu is slow and more cumbersome than the Verizon Guide. Add no surround
sound with pass-through and I find it useless. Really disappointing. I disconnected it.

KOK.. I had issues with my IO... and have seen a few more posts about this when it first came out... seems like 90% of the issues were bad HDMI cables... and loose connections.... I know for fact once I changed to a new cable and made sure it was connected
tightly... have not had a problem since...

(screen would cut out, stuttered, froze etc)

I watch more TV than I play games... TBH, I have not even tried for more than 5 minutes to use the 1 guide... I use the voice commands to basic channels... volume ETC but use my cable remote for everything else... I just like the fact the TV is on and I
am still able to be "ON XB" and XBL

I have Cox (giggle) and I have no video issues. I do have sound issues though, which I think is related to shaky support on X1.

I also never use OneGuide, because i still browse with my harmony remote (fave channels set), or with voice commands. Though OneGuide is faster than my slow cable box.

To conclude, MS would win the world if they enable some form of DVR support.

    HDMI Pass Through

People have the misconception of HDMI pass through. All this means is that the HDMI signal from your cable box is "passed through" the Xbox one. If your Xbox isn't on, it won't be able to pass the signal through.

As an aside, do we have any info on whether the HDMI input is passed through the X1's scaler or whether it is bypassed? Just that it is clearly a big step up from the cheap ones in some of my kit.

It would be a real nice feature to be able to set a Sat box to its native Res and then let the X1 scaler work its magic but have an option to use or bypass in the menu?
