HDMI latency, can we get someone from M$ to answer for this?

"Over at the Penny Arcade Report, Microsoft’s Jeff Henshaw officially confirmed that other consoles
    will work
through the Xbox One’s interface. If you want to hook up a PS4 or Wii Uto the
back of your Xbox One, go nuts! While many of us were concerned that the additional lag introduced through the Xbox One would cause problems for some games, Henshaw denies that this will be an issue. “It is an extremely small lag that the human eye will not
be able to perceive,” he says."

-excerpt from ExtremeTech article on Nov 8 Microsoft confirms that PS4, Wii U will work with Xbox One HDMI passthrough - ExtremeTech

one of many articles quoting Mr. Henshaw

Jeff here says latency will not be an issue yet it very much is as shown here:

There absolutely has to be a way to fix this. Could we perhaps get a patch to add a setting for the latency? even an Off or Default option would be fine.

M$ I realize there is no immediate fix because I've been on the chat support recently, but could we have someone answer that may have an idea of whether or not this is even on a list of things that need to get fixed. It does NEED to get fixed and in my case
M$ has 29 more days to fix it or my console will be returned. I simply do not have enough HDMI ports on my TV for all the devices I wish to use.

E3 and Henshaws statements had made me believe Xbox One would be flawless in it's capabilities as a passthrough.

    Mr. Henshaw,

My human eyes can see the latency. It burns them.

    :)

Ugh, think i`ve found another glitch on hearthfire.

Reason i`m trying to call it is so that we can work problems out and then people are more aware to the functions of the game. If theres an answer to be had its pretty likely someone on here knows the answer.

HDMI latency, can we get someone from M$ to answer for this?

When I spoke with chat support today I was informed that this feature is not a "supported" feature which is support lingo for either "we aren't allowed to comment" or "I have literally no idea". I asked "so this is an advertised feature but it isn't a supported
feature?" to which he replied "I don't think it's an advertised feature either". Fair statement I suppose considering I haven't seen any commercials pointing out that feature BUT shouldn't Jeff have kept his mouth shut about how well it was going to work if
it wasn't going to be supported?

I run my 360 through my xbox with basically no lag. If you worried that much slave your cable box the the one and run a console straight.

While I can't find the article now, I do remember Microsoft's stance being that it wasn't designed for putting another console through it, only TV, specifically because of lag.

They will not be able to fix your problem in 29 days or less. Because this isn't just a physical pass-through, but rather being processed by the Xbox One, there will always be lag. There is no fix for this, it's physics. Every time you go through a transistor,
it takes time, go through enough of them, and you notice it. en.wikipedia.org/.../Delay_calculation

For a more reasonable solution to your HDMI port problem, try MonoPrice, they have solutions ranging from $9 all the way up to $300. www.monoprice.com/.../Index

I understand there are work arounds and I also understand basic electronics (VERY basic lol) the problem I have is a M$ spokes person stating that there would be no visible delay. The delay that is apparent makes using a PC through the Xbox One very uncomfortable.
I understand the processing is what causes the delay but I'd wonder if they could patch the One to avoid the processing.

For cable boxes the latency is no issue and I see that this was M$'s intentions but if that is the case perhaps they should have Mr. Henshaw correct his statements instead of misleading the public.

I'd wonder if it would be possible to patch the One to remove the buffer that it causes. If the xbox is capable of a direct passthrough without processing the video information this would not be an issue. A simple on/off toggle for hdmi in cache would fix
this issue entirely. I do also understand that depending on the hardware inside the xbox one console this may not be an option.

I would really like to here M$ weigh in on this one since their spokesperson assured me that I would be able to plug any device into the HDMI without visually noticeable latency.

@alcoholic rug thank you for your response. the monoprice link has some very good looking solutions. I am really only looking for M$'s answer to this though since their support told me it was unsupported yet their spokesperson told me it would work fine.

I just want to know if there are any options. If its something they have heard and are concerned about or if they are ignoring it. If they are ignoring it is it because there is no way to solve the issue or do they not care. If I pay someone 500 dollars
for a piece of equipment based on the idea that it will work with my configuration due to a spokespersons statements I deserve an answer to why those statements were bold faced lies.

HDMI latency, can we get someone from M$ to answer for this?

The problem is that the Xbox One does need to process, or at least touch the video in order to overlay the One Guide, etc on top of the source video. I don't have any idea how they are doing this. It's possible if it's being handled by software that there
could be some refinements to the code. TVs add latency as well, some more than others. Likewise for receivers. Perhaps the One plus your TV is enough latency to be annoying, where maybe going through another TV would have been fine, but your combination
    causes noticeable latency for you.

If I look at the PS4 and the One, both were just ready enough to be released. There's a ton of unfinished work on both consoles. This is part of the fun of a launch console these days. I really wish I could find the article/video where they (Microsoft)
says the port was designed for TV, not other consoles, specifically because of this latency. I think the article may have been on Ars. If I find it, I'll post it here.

To me, there will always be some amount of latency no matter how much they improve the code, if it's even possible to remedy. There's no other console that even offers this feature, so if you return the Xbox One, the PS4 doesn't solve your problem and will
require a box from Monoprice to fix. For me, the fastest and cheapest way for you to solve your problem today, is either a new TV or a HDMI splitter (that doesn't add latency). After the next update to the One, if that solves your problem, sell your HDMI
    box on Ebay, done.

Microsoft isn't trying to screw you over, it's just impossible to take every possible combination into consideration on day one. You might also consider emailing / messaging Major Nelson. Xbox Live's Major Nelson

    Good luck!

ignoring the troll, thanks again for the response alcoholic rug. My curiosity is specifically on why their spokesperson lied and how that makes them feel. It makes me feel like I was lied to. That I was taken advantage of. I understand that the overlay is
the reason behind this (as well as the "xbox one guide" and other cable features) but if possible an on/off toggle for the cache would cause a blank screen in the TV tile and stop the latency. whether or not that is actually possible is another question. Usually
disabling a "feature" is a good way to make it stop interfering. I'm fully aware that this was designed for cable boxes now but prior to that I was guided by Jeff Henshaws statements that I could plug any device into my xbox one without noticeable latency.
His words specifically sold me on the device. With the *** line up the One has can you blame me? I own a $500 forza box that can't hdmi passthrough properly. Does that concept not frustrate you? It does me.

  13. HDMI latency, can we get someone from M$ to answer for this?

I want to be as professional as possible in replying.

This is the answer is as the person suggested when you asked M$, however I feel you have more of a request rather than a question.

-PS4, Xbox 360, Wii and PC are NOT and were NOT advertised or promised to work with 0 lag or latency through the Xbox One.

-The only supported HDMI input is TV or cable/satellite boxes (Microsoft)

    support.xbox.com/.../getting-started

-Anything else WILL have latency (see the quote at the bottom of this reply) as well as TV's too.

***The extent of latency may not be a result of the Xbox One, but instead a result of the HDMI output of the device of your choosing. TO be fair "To get the very best performance, make sure your TV and console are set to their highest-performing video resolution."

    ***HDMI pass-through in general***

-Blue Ray/Cable Boxes are not = to PS$,Xbox 360, PS3, Wii HDMI signals.

-If you're sending a signal into a device, and that device is processing the signal that comes and coding that signal back out there will always be delays. Its not the HDMI is sending and producing the same signals, it has to be coded.

-AV receivers have different modes (Game Mode) to address lag or latency when using HDMI pass-through but there is still a delay

The reply you're thinking of was stated as such "Well, Microsoft might let you connect the PS4 to the Xbox One, but it doesn't really want you to do so. Writing on the gaming forum NeoGAF after his TGS appearance, Penello said that connecting the two consoles
    "won't be a great experience."

Due to HDMI latency issues, Penello reasoned, using the Xbox One's HDMI pass-through feature for any kind of "interactive" entertainment would result in lag during gameplay, which suggests that Microsoft wouldn't recommend playing an Xbox 360 through the
    One either.

The HDMI port was designed with passive video viewing in mind, Penella said, where latency issues wouldn't disrupt the experience as dramatically as it would if you were playing a game on a connected device. Gamers will have to wait until the Xbox One comes
out this November to see how this alleged interconnectivity actually plays out, but for now it remains one of the console's most promising features, whether you plug a PS4 into it or not."

Hdmi pass through was always intended for t.v intergration.

Of course you can plug any hdmi device into the X1, just like MS said.

None of MS current marketing blurb recommends plugging consoles into the X1.

The post above mine sums it up perfectly.

You should probably start by not calling them m$ if you want an official response...

Anyways. Anytime you pass an HDMI signal through a device ypi introduce additional lag because of hdcp, even when hdcp is off its on and slowing things down. add on inferior hardware on low end splitters or switches amd you have more issues.

The xbox one isn't a traditional pass through its taking the image and running it through its own frame buffer to output which means it's going to modify color, gamma and also hit the scalar chip. This modifies image quality negatively if you don't properly
configure color settings or reference levels. It also can introduce input lag.

Thing is it doesn't introduce much provided the rest of your setup is high quality. I've passed 360, ps4 amd pc through the xbox one which then output to a capture device which then output to a receiver then to my TV. I'm theory I should see horrid input
lag but in reality I didn't because nothing in my chain was adding large amounts of lag.

So to summarize yes the xbox one can and does introduce some lag and always will despite having Improved via patches since your post. If your equipment is cheap you get cheap results but of you invest in quality electronics you won't have any issues amd
Microsoft really can't be blamed for people trying to save $100 or more on a lower end TV. That savings comes from somewhere and since panels are generally pretty much the same its the hardware behind them thats important... And the software. A simple firmware
update 6 weeks after my TV came out shaved 16ms off input lag
