General HDCP / HDMI Handshake problems and guidelines

When a HDMI / HDCP Handshaking issue occur the easiest way to re-negotiate the handshake is to power cycle the source device or the display. Always wait 10 seconds or longer when the display or source has been power cycled for the HDMI distribution equipment
to reset hdmi handshake / timing. Some displays may also re-negotiate the handshake when swopping to another input e.g. AV1 ,AV2 or another HDMI Port (wait 10 seconds) and swopping back to correct HDMI Input via remote control. HDMI Distribution equipment
should never be powered off since it provides the path for the HDCP / HDMI Handshake between source and display. Some devices such as switches and HDMI Switches / Combo splitters also allow for HDMI handshake re-authentication by switching from one input to
another and back to the input having HDCP handshaking issues. If power cycles on the Display or Source does not prove to be effective power cycle all HDMI equipment (Source, HDMI Distribution Equipment, Receivers / Amplifiers and Displays). If HDCP errors
still occur you need a firmware upgrade to sort out the HDMI port timing / handshake issues on the source or display. Please contact your Source device, Display or Digital receiver manufacturer for a firmware upgrade and advice on hdmi handshake issues. It
is often extremely difficult to troubleshoot these issues since the HDTV supplier will blame the source supplier, will blame the digital receiver supplier, will blame the Hdmi Distribution supplier etc. etc. If going through your total home entertainment setup,
make sure all your equipment has the latest firmware.

Onkyo receiver causing Xbox One S disconnect and white flashes

Probably a HDMI handshaking issue between the new receiver and Xbox.

Check for a firmware update associated with the receiver you own in case the manufacturer has already fixed it, you could try swapping out HDMI cables but that a longshot. Some receivers require a 4K/HDR/HDCP2.2 mode to be set manually as well but you may already have set that.

Xb1x says not all 4k & hdr features supported

The surge protector wouldn't cause issues with HDR, but you still shouldn't use one as the console is already protected. Using a protector on the Xbox one can cause severe instability issues.

Have you connected your console to an HDMI that supports HDR? On many TV's, not all HDMI ports have HDR support. Also, have you enabled HDR on the source HDMI you have your console connected to? HDR is not on by default. HDR is already enabled for Smart
    TV apps.

First off thanks for the help,

I will try plugging it into the wall without a surge protector, I have it connected to hdmi port 2 because the tv manual says ports 2 and 3 have hdr and hdmi 2.2 support.

And as far as the hdr setting on the tv I have it set to auto, the options are auto, hdr 10 and hdl. But come to think of it I just downloaded a firmware update that adds Dolby Vision to the tv.

HDR dark dull and washed out

I assume you are using an Xbox One S/X, which supports 4K/HDR.

Some 4K TV's only display 4K/HDR through one HDMI port. Is this the case with yours? You can also check your TV settings to make sure 4K(UHD)/HDR/HDMI 2.0 is enabled over the HDMI port. Verify that HDR is enabled in your Xbox display settings (set Color
depth to 10-bit, ensure HDR is enabled in the advanced settings).

Since the PS4 Pro seems to be getting HDR color over one of your HDMI ports, what happens if you were to swap it with your Xbox? Do you get your HDR colors back?
