  1. HDD/SSD Requirements for 4K Recording

Does anyone know the speed required to be able to record with an external hard drive?

Well, we haven't been able to record gameplay properly since April with the same SSDs that we used to record 4K with.

Then they started saying that our hard drives weren't fast enough (half a year ago they were HDD/SSD Requirements for 4K Recording o_O). Later they confirmed that communication by adding to recent Insider builds the notification that our hard drive isn't fast enough, which comes up even when trying to record while playing, playing the console and recording at 720p with an SSD connected with USB 3.0.

So I would like to know an official answer. What is the speed required to record in 4k?

Because if that were the case I could spend more than 100 dollars on a fast hard drive, although I really don't think that to record a video with a bitrate of 25 MB/s you need a 1000 MB/s hard drive, I think that the one I have that goes at more than 400 MB/s by default is enough, or at least it had been going great before April.

Remember that the gameplay recording system, or GAMEDVR, is an application specific to the console, not an independent one.

Is there something wrong with the long-form recording option in my Xbox One X? Unable to reliably record for longer periods.

    Hi

So sicne 4k recording works fine on one of the two. Have you checked if they are on same firmware version?

And I only have problem with 4k, 1080p recording works fine. Will try SSD sometime to check if its a HDD bottleneck issue.

    thanks

Xbox One X randomly stops recording gameplay

I have the same issue. Seems like it started recently, as I was able to record hour long 4k gaming videos few weeks back.

I have a 3TB 3.0 usb external hard drive, and all my recordings for 4K HDR or 4K SD are under 5 minutes or smaller. Anything in 1080p gets recorded for 60mins+.

I tried switching hdd to different usb port, reformatted the ext. Hdd but the issue remains.

    Really annoying me now.

Not sure if Microsoft deliberately did this or some bug came along with recent updates or something.

I need help with my series s

It's because the Series S/X are new gen. They require the xbox SSD. You are using an HDD. SSD's are way faster than an SSD, the series s is trying to run the 120fps and higher graphics. Thats why they are telling you to move the games. It wants you to play them on the internal SSD storage.

Watching movies on Xbox One S

Thanks. But it is formatted as media drive it is a wd 3.0 3.6tb with 3tb mp3 x264 full HD and some 720p also. A few movies do not play but if I put them on an ext ssd they play.. I use kodi. None 4k play on the hdd. On ssd they do as mp4. Mkv does not work

Recordings do stop if you go to the Home screen...

Though I'm pretty confident it may be your Hard Drive that is the issue... 4K HDR content requires a lot of bandwidth, something most Mechanical Hard Drives can't provide... Depending on the Game you are playing, if it is past paced I would think that the
Hard Drive you are using cannot write fast enough, so as soon as the cache is full for recording, the console will just end the recording so it can finalise the file rather than leaving you with a useless recording that cannot be accessed...

I use a Samsung T3 External SSD for recording Game Captures of extended length and haven't had any issues since using that particular drive.

Also, is the drive you are using powered through the USB or does it have it's own power supply? One with it's own power supply may work better if you have one, But an SSD should most certainly sort out the problem...

If you do want to double check whether it is a DVR issue, try recording at 1080p and see if the issue still persists. If recording at 1080p the recording lasts until the end each time, then you'll know that your Hard Drive is bottlenecking the 4K HDR recordings.

    Hope that helps. :)
