So why does the 1TB COD Advanced Warfare console use about 265GB for what I'm guessing is the operating system, while the standard 500GB consoles use around 140GB. I just started up my console getting it ready for my son for Christmas and I see I only have
734.4GB free out of 1TB, but from what I've read there was around 340GB free on the 500GB consoles. Why wouldn't the operating system be the same size for both? What's taking up all that extra space on the 1TB console?

    :)

Oh definitely, depending on the size of the game. Also depending on how much DLC has been purchased for a game. Just saying based on the current figures, if he's at 50% with his first 6 games, those games are really only taking up about 30%.

Correct me if I'm wrong on these figures, gang - arctic cat, the built-in hard drive is 500GB, but of that, I believe 120 are reserved for system files and local saves, which leaves only about 380GB of space for installed games. Now, if you've installed
6 games and are at 50% full, technically counting the 120GB of system files, those 6 games only comprise about 130GB of space, leaving you a full 250 remaining for more games. Going by average, if you installed another 6 similarly-sized games, you'd use another
130GB, which would still leave an additional 120GB for more games.

Long story short, you should be able to have 12-15 games installed, based on average figuring from what you've described. It seems to fill up faster early on, because you've already got 120GB of system files on there, so it takes much less time to go from
0-50% than it does to go from 50-100%. Hope this helps!

Fyi, my AW console had ~780 GB free when I first got it iirc.

  5. Hmm, maybe it already is subtracting what the download will be for the AW game. Even so, that means 220GB was used already, and again, the 500GB systems only took up 140-160. So why the extra space being used?

  6. It's the way all HDD are, they are always under what is stated by a percentage. Even a 2gig flash drive only has 1.8gig of space.

  7. Yeah, I get that, I just bought a 16GB tablet that had about 12GB actually free. But I'm wondering why the Xbox one's take up different amounts of space when they use the same operating system.

Same thing with the console, some of the Hard drive space is already gone the rest is taken up by the three OS's running on the One. The larger the Hard drive the more space that seems to disappear into a void.

This is the best I can explain it whist at work.

  9. A 1TB hard drive is around 931GB when formatted, so you can subtract 71GB straight away. This 69GB wasn't actually lost, in fact, it was never there in the first place. Computer systems and consoles see 1TB in its exact binary form of 1024 Gigabytes, but
manufactures use the decimal calculation when sizing these devices, which means when the system looks at them they appear to have lost space. Terabyte - Wikipedia

So, in actual fact, about 127GB is being used by the console. What is also a fact is that the OS or OS's of the Xbox One are not over 100GB. A fresh install of Windows 8.1 is a little over 20GB and it is highly unlikely the system OS is larger than that,
even with three of them, of which one is a hypervisor, linking the other two OS's together.

  10. Sorry made an error in that post. A total of 69GB is lost in translation, not 71GB. Too late to edit now.

We need to be aware of the size of games though. Master Chief Collection itself comprises 60GB worth of storage space. Also depending on some of the other games out there you could be looking at somewhere between 20 - 40GB worth of space taken up. 6 games
could theoretically take up 50% of the space available.

    Thanks Yapper. USB 3.0.

If you delete games they will always be available for redownload if you choose.
