HDCP Handshake Issues - Black Screen in Bluray and Xbox Video apps

At some point my Xbox One started having issue with black screen whenever a video is played using Xbox Video app. Same issue playing bluray disks. The screen turns black and console does not react to any input on the controller, has to be power cycled. Other
apps (Youtube) or games like Deadrising 3 work fine.

Xbox One is connected to Onkyo TS-XR607 receiver using the HDMI cable that came with the console, and from there to Toshiba Regza TV.

I also have Xbox 360, PS4 and PS3, and none of them have issues with video playback or Bluray disk playback.

Apparently there is an HDCP handshake issue that causes this. Whenever the video playback is starting, the receiver is looking for signal but fails to detect it. I am sure that there is nothing wrong with the receiver as other consoles have no issue with
    DRMed video.

Of course I can try running the HDMI cable directly to the TV, but I'd like to get this working again through the receiver. It used to work fine before, it seems that a recent update to the console changed that.

What can I try to troubleshoot this handshake issue?

    thanks in advance!

    :)

    HDMI issue specifically with 360

It happens with all Xbox 360's, Zacabeb & Obsessive Power, had the same issue while using a HDMI Switch etc.. It's to do with the Handshake being overwritten on the HDMI Switches IC, when you change to another source & it loses the HDCP HandShake.. HDMI
    v1.2 has issues with Non-Dynamic / Non-Error Correcting HDCP & HDMI v1.3 + v1.4 (PS3 or BluRay) doesn't have this issue..

Friendly advice: get a good hdmi cable to connect the set top box to the xbox one. This will help you mitigate any hdcp handshake issues.

Just out of curiosity, when was the last time you did a hard reset of the Xbox One? Meaning press the power button for 5-8 seconds until it shuts down. Wait for a bit, then power up the One by pressing the button.

I had the blank screen problem prior to the March update. After getting the update and hard resetting the One, this problem has been non existent.

Oh I have to do this every time this black screen appears. No other way to reset the unresponsive console.

I was hoping that the numerous system updates, including the October 2014 one would address this issue. But the problem still persists. This is highly annoying that I can't watch any kind of video content on my Xbox One. I have to use either PS4 or PS3 for
Bluray or Xbox 360 for Xbox Video content. All of these consoles are plugged into the same receiver!

Was anyone with the same issue able to resolve it?

Have you gone to Settings --> Disc & Blu Ray and chosen to clear the persistent storage? In the past, different issues I've heard related to the Blu-Ray have been because the persistent storage has gotten bogged down and needed to be cleared. Not 100% sure
this will work in this instance, but it's worth a try!

thanks Jaymo1978, I will try this when I am near my xbox one. But I doubt it will help - I am not trying to play any blueray content, this is xbox video that I purchased through the marketplace. Works fine on xbox 360.

Let me know! I've heard this "clear persistent storage" suggestion on a number of different issues aside from Blu-Ray, so I'm crossing my fingers!

  11. Hey there, FourT2! I'm very sorry to see that you've been getting this black screen for so long! If what Jaymo suggested doesn't help you out, I've got a couple things we can try for you to see if we can get these videos working for you! HDCP Handshake Issues - Black Screen in Bluray and Xbox Video apps :) We're going to
do some things that you've done previously, but in specific orders. I do appreciate your patience with us for this, and apologize that we're making you do some things again.

    • Uninstall the Xbox Video app.
    • Hold the power button on the console for 10 seconds to power cycle.
    • Install the Xbox Video app once you've signed in.
Let me know if that helps. If it doesn't, let's take a look at your network a little. I know that other streaming apps are working normally, but looking at the network will make sure we've absolutely ruled everything out. On our

slow performance troubleshooter, you can see the minimum speeds required for Xbox Live. Do you meet those for HD streaming? Are you wireless? If you are, can we try a wired connection to rule out possible wireless interference?

If that doesn't help you out, we're going to check out your display options. You'll want to make sure your
TV resolution is optimized for your television. If it is, have you checked out our
display troubleshooter? Go through that and see if any of the steps in there help you out.

If none if this gets that black screen to go away while hooked up to your receiver, have you checked to make sure that it works just fine hooked up directly to your TV? If it does, then we will want to pass information along about that receiver. If you still
get the black screen while directly connected to your TV, then please post back in here. I'll need some information from you at that point.

There's a lot here. I do hope that something here gets you sorted out. Again, if nothing seems to get you watching videos without interruptions, then post back in here so that we can figure out what we need to look into. We really appreciate your assistance
in nailing down what is going on! HDCP Handshake Issues - Black Screen in Bluray and Xbox Video apps :)

Hi Jaymo1978k, I tried your suggestion today and as I suspected - same results. Like I said before, there seems to be an issue between xbone and display through certain receivers.

HDCP Handshake Issues - Black Screen in Bluray and Xbox Video apps

Hi Missess Quizel, as you suggested, I tried uninstalling the Xbox Video app, but I am still experiencing the same issue. yep, I am using the optimal display settings. I am on an excellent internet connection.

I did not try to bypass receiver. After all, my xbox 360, my PS3, my PS4 have no issues with bluray or purchased video playback through that very same receiver.

  14. Hey, FourT2! Thanks so much for checking that all out for me. Bypassing the receiver is a troubleshooting step that we need to check. Even though everything else works just fine through that receiver, I want to make sure it's not a console issue. Bypassing
the receiver will help me out with if we need to get your console repaired or if we need to look into compatibility with that particular receiver and the Xbox One.

Once you've tried bypassing that receiver, post back in here with your results. We'll determine from there what our next steps are! HDCP Handshake Issues - Black Screen in Bluray and Xbox Video apps :D

Found a way to solve this!

Display settings should be set to Auto rather than HDMI. See this thread for some info:

    forums.xbox.com/.../1629747.aspx

How does this make any sense? I am connected via HDMI so selecting HDMI should just work? At the very least this is a very bad user experience. Please fix this or at least document this!
