Unfortunately, if it is not available on the system, there is not much that can be done. You can keep trying to change and see if it just took a long time to free the gamer tag up, but honestly, if it is not much trouble to you, I would recommend just adding any character to the gamer tag and see if it is available.

Also, depending on when you made your account, the rules for the gamer tag have been updated in 2019. You can check them here:

Again, if the gamer tag you try to use says it is unavailable, there is not much that can be done other than try to change it a little bit ( As long as it's within the rules )

Since here are a community of gamers and do not have access to account/billing information, we cannot do this, okay? It can be pretty hard to change a gamer tag from one account to another like this and usually, it does not work so quickly, and also other players may take the gamer tag. Many players have the same issue.

yeah it wont even let me contact them on my regular gamer tag but thanks anyways

Hay I can't change my gamer tag I just payed for a new year of gold and it wo t let me download the maps so what do I do tells me the same thing

Well I have been in contact with investigation and escalation XBOX support team. I have yet to retrieve my tag back, or have spoken to anyone that has had the inclination to help me.

Question to others:

Has anyone been hacked and able to retrieve their original Xbox gamer tag?
