Having owned XB1 for 3 Months - Few Thoughts

Few things

1 - Kinect sign-in, nice idea and very cool, but what about people who share consoles with people who just want to listen to music / watch Netflix. My girlfriend who does not play games is not going to be buying her own XBL Gold, Xbox Music and Netflix subscriptions
just to use them on XB1 - I just want the option to tell it to sign is as me everytime.

2 - DNLA - As has been mentioned many times, If its the One box for the living room it needs to play local media from the 2.8Tb on my server, ideally a Plex App (Why reinvent the wheel), this is kind of key - I've got a Win7 Media Centre HTPC plugged in
on the HDMI, and it is still on media duty, and frankly I might as well plug it directly into the AV receiver again.

3 - The ability to restart the console (sounds dumb, but I can't find one) holding the power button down is akin to doing the same on a PC, not something you'd really want to be doing on a regular basis. And on my XB1 strider will only work after a cold
boot (Strider problem I suspect, but fact remains you can't elegantly reboot the console)

There are a few more, but I think they have been announced OneGuide in the UK etc

How Are They?

I've owned Port Royale 3 for a few months now, but I've not played it. My brother says it's good though.

 

The first 2 are things that have been requested a lot, so I think we'll probably see both of those things implemented. Regarding the Kinect sign in, a lot of people would rather just pick a gamertag and have that auto-sign in when the console is turned on,
just like the 360.

I've also had issues with Strider where I launch the game and it just dumps me back at the dashboard, but you should be fine to use the "hold the power button in for 5 seconds" method to do a cold boot of the console. Hopefully those little glitches that
require a cold boot will be worked out in time.

 

I think if you set the box as your home console in the settings, anyone signing in gets your gold benefits.

 

Easy fix. Gf needs to quickly make a free online account and add her as a family member and that's it. She gets free gold membership. Did,the same with my wife.. Many people forget this family gold package

 

Ah - I didn't know that (Never worried about it when I had the 360)

Where do you set the box as your home console?

 

If you set the Xbox One as Home, then any profile that uses it, will get the benefit of Gold, so no need for multiple gold.

I use plex on my win8 tablet, and i just use Play To Device and i can play my plex media on the xbox one.

 

I actually picked up a cheap Android tab, and put skifta on and yes that works, as does play-to from my Surface, however it's another step, another thing you have to do and another device.

I get the question, 'Well before I only needed one remote control, why is this more complicated to do the same thing? - now I have to pick up a tablet, fire it up and I just want to watch a film!'

Which is hard to answer.....

Hence the reason my HTPC is back in the rack as it stands it is easier and more feature rich.

RE the Cold Boot - I know holding the button down for 7 seconds will do a reboot (Standard ATX kill command) but I assume that this is the same as doing it on a PC, which is not advisable as it is not a clean shutdown and could cause issue if the console
had not finished writing to disk....

So an option to run it in fast boot mode, but also reboot and power down fully if requested would be good.

And another thing - I know it will auto-check for updates in fast boot mode, and this is fine, but again, I'd like to be able to ask the console to check (Much the same way as the W8 store auto-updates, but still allows the user to check)

Again this is because if someone who doesn't know what the unit is doing thinks something's wrong because they see a black bar one the screen they maybe tempted to restart it, so I'd like to be able to manually check if I know a big update is around that
will take a little time to install(Like the march one)

Thing is it is so close to being the perfect device.....

 

Alternatively, you could setup up multiple users on your single Netflix account. That way, you can always stay signed in on your Xbox, & she can choose her individual profile for Netflix.
