Having issues outputting your Xbox One S in 4k? Try this if you have a 4K Blu-Ray.

So, today I got my Xbox One S. When I hooked it up to my TV (The model is TCL 55US5800 if you're curious) it wouldn't recognize that my TV supported any 4K features. It refused to switch to 4K in the video settings no matter what I did and

    gave me this error
. Now, I know my TV supports most of these features (Minus HDR & 4K 50Hz) and before taking the issue to Microsoft I called my TV's customer support to make absolutely sure that it could. They assured me it does. So after that, I called
and talked to Xbox Support for a while. Eventually after checking everything else (Proper HDMI cord & spec, proper port, TV Settings, etc.) they thought the HDMI cable shipped with the Xbox could be bad. So, I went out and bought a new cable (Though I should
note they kindly offered to send me a replacement, I just didn't want to wait) and tried it. Same issue. It still won't recognize that it supports these features. I tried unplugging everything and starting from scratch with the new cable. Nothing was working
any better compared to the cable that shipped with the Xbox.

    Now here's the trick.

Out of frustration, I decided to pop in a 4K Blu-Ray disc to see what would happen. Sure enough, when it started playing, the screen flashed a few times, which to me means the the resolution must have changed. So while the Blu-Ray was still playing, I brought
up the guide and went into All Settings, Display & Sound, then Video Output. It was still set to 1080p, but now when I went to change it to 4K UHD, it worked! I don't know if the Blu-Ray automatically switching my TV into 4K resolution allowed it to suddenly
recognize it supports these feature or what, but I wanted to let others know this trick in case anyone is having a similar issue. It was driving me nuts. I'd also like to save anyone the trouble of sending in their Xbox to be replaced, because had I not figured
this out, it was the next thing Xbox Support was going to have me do.

I also want Microsoft to be aware of it if it's a bug, which very much seems like it is.

    :)

4k problems on xbox one s

    Hey WILDman260,

Are specifically having this issue with the 4K Blue-Ray version of Oblivion as well? I saw that you mentioned 4K Blu-Rays worked before the update, did you set up your Xbox One S and try a 4K Blu-ray before updating?

    Ghostshrimp,

Thanks for posting this up, are there any other Universal Studios 4K Blu-Ray movies that you can try out as well? In the meantime, please try uninstalling the Blu-Ray app, power cycle your Xbox One S console by holding the power button, and then reinstall
    the Blu-Ray app.

Let us know how it goes!

  3. 4k problems ono xbox one s

I love everything about the Xbox S except for the 4k blue ray player. I bought 2 4k UHD disks, The Revenant and Star Trek Into Darkness. The Revenant had major audio sync problems which just come and go. Star Trek Into Darkness would not even load. Returned
it and the second one would not load. At that point I started searching the Internet and found that many are having issues with the 4k blue ray player. Here is a thread at AVS detailing many of the issues. www.avsforum.com/.../2481633-xbox-one-s-uhd-blu-ray-player-aug-2016-a.html

Hopefully Microsoft will be able to fix this quickly.

I'm thinking this might be the issue with my Hisense TV as well. Darn frustrating, but I don't have any UHD Blu-Ray's to give it a try.

  5. I have a TV Hisense also. A 65" 4k TV that I can't set to 4k in the TV Resolution options on my XBOX One S 500GB model, which does show UHD 4k as an option but gives me the same error when selecting. In the Advanced Video Settings, I can select: Allow
24Hz, Allow 50Hz, and Allow 4k. I have tried running YouTube but it only displays in 1080p. I unfortunately don't have a 4k Blu-Ray disc to test with either.

Is this caused by TV's that automatically detect and display the detected resolution? I have the same issue with a 4k Android box but switching the input to HDMI 2 and back to HDMI 1 gets it to display properly in 3840X2160. This can't do that with the
XBOX One S though because I can't set the TV Resolution to UHD. If Microsoft could implement the ability to select the UHD setting and leave it enabled for 15 seconds or so before timing out on a confirmation, I could toggle the input on the remote to get
the TV to redetect the displaying resolution from the XBOX One S.

This is the support forums if you found the solution to this great! But i don't see you needing support as i can see you solved your own issue if you think this will solve other players issues PM a staff member and see what you can do to getting this as
a sticky thread here are the requirements.

    • Make sure the information is specific to Xbox Support related topics. Game guides are great, but since we are wanting support specific posts, they are not considered for this program. Think more like how to solve issues with downloading
a game, or a certain connection issue - those sorts of topics.
    • No duplicates! If you are considering writing a guide for possible sticky, make sure that it hasn't already been covered, either by Official Support or a fellow community member like yourself. We don't want you to waste time writing something that's
      already been done!
    • Does the content already exist on Xbox.com? If so, no go. We're mostly looking for content that can't be found anywhere else. Maybe you have experience with a certain error code that doesn't exist in our
Xbox 360 Error Code Search tool, and you know just the trick to solve it. Write it up! However, if there's already an article about the issue on
Support.Xbox.com, we're likely not needing to add that content directly to our forums.
    • Make sure your guide is easy to read! If you cram a lot of information into a single paragraph, it's not likely to help other users, since your point may be lost in translation. To make sure your content has maximum effectiveness, be concise, use
bullets when describing steps, and make sure you explain *why* you're suggesting each step. When people are informed as to why they are doing something, it makes them more comfortable in performing the action, and leads to a happier experience. Got pictures
of the steps? Throw them in!
    • Once you're done, send a Forums Support agent a PM. After you've finished your masterpiece, send any of the Forums Support staff (Mister Maka, Mister Beep, Miss Bijoux, Misses Quinzel) a quick Private Message. Include in your subject line
that it is a Forum Sticky submission, and include a quick summary of what the sticky is about, and what forum it should go in. If we deem it a worthy topic, we'll provide you with a way to send it to us via email.

The post above by PurpleNurpe seems like spam, isn't anything close to an answer, and doesn't contribute anything to this discussion!

I tried a 4k sample file in mp4, since other files I tried didn't work with Media Player. All I got was a green screen with sound. I wouldn't be surprised if Media Player is completely useless in the first place, but it was worth a shot.

@Firebird3776: Dang, I was curious if other forms of media would work. Too bad. I hope you can find something else to try.

@JCSWW: I agree, I really think it should be like it used to be before HDMI auto-detection. Let the Xbox output 4K regardless if the TV supports it or not and have a timeout if it doesn't work. If that was the case I don't think this would've been an issue
at all. I should also note I haven't been able to get YouTube to play in 4K either, even after fixing the output settings. I've had good luck with 4K Netflix content though.

@PurpleNurpe: Honestly I don't know if it's solved or not. I'm half expecting it to suddenly revert back to 1080p. I'd like some sort of explanation as to why this is happening first. Once I have that I'll feel confident enough to say it's solved. I appreciate
    the info though!

I would consider upgrading my Netflix subscription but I don't think it's possible for Netflix to push the console into UHD.

Hey there again i suggested you should contact a staff member on these forums because i do think you should recommend it to them even if they don't make it a sticky thread it was worth a try.

Firebird3776 please do not mistake me for spam I'm on these forums almost every day assisting users who need it.

@PurpleNurpe Then try offering solutions instead of generic copy and pasting stuff that isn't really relevant to the topic. Please tell me where in your "suggested answer" that you provide any information that actually contributes to any sort of solution
to the issue! Yes, having this thread stickied would be nice but there is no guaranteed solution to this issue. Unless Microsoft wants to start sending out 4k Blu-Ray movies to everyone to help in solving the issue, then I don't think there has been any
action taken to correct this issue and there is no guarantee that is a permanent fix for the issue as well.

    Hi everyone,

I wanted to add onto this. I just upgraded to the one s today and it took me about 4 hours to finally figure out how to get the 4k to work. I actually went out and bought a 4k blu ray to try the idea above but it didnt work. Then I called Microsoft and
spoke with a really nice gentleman for about 35 minutes who then asked his supervisor for assistance and he couldnt help. The supervisor just said my tv isny comparable. After off the phone with them I factory reset the tv and XBOX. I fifured it was worth
the shot, still no luck. So I started bouncing thru my tv setting for model (55us5800-tcl) and in a menu you have to enable HDMI 2.0 for the HDMI ports after that it fixed it all.

For my tv I went to settings-tv inputs-selected the one I wanted-hdmi mode-then change from HDMI 1.4 to HDMI 2.0 and voila, it was all magically fixed

Hallelujah!! I hope this helps other people out having some issues

@MP6593: Good god... you just made me feel like the biggest idiot alive. I completely forgot about those HDMI port settings. When I first got the TV, I set them all to automatic version switching, so they switch based on what the device wants, because I
think they were all set to 1.4 by default but I can't remember. Either way I put that setting in the back of my mind thinking I'd never have to touch it again. Silly me for thinking "Auto" would work properly. Sure enough, I switched it to 2.0 and now my
issues are magically gone. I'm gonna go cry in a corner now.
