Having a problem with my Xbox One and external drives

Every time I connect the drive, to my Xbox One, the power light on it (the drive) only stays lit for about 5 seconds before flashing twice and turning off. I've tried all the USB plugs on the system with the same result. I've yet to get the system to detect
that an external drive is connected. I've tried power cycling (unplugging the power cord and waiting 5 mins before rebooting) the console twice with no effect on the problem.

Am I missing something, is there anything else I can try or is something wrong with my system?

My drive is a 2TB USB 3.0 SeaGate model #SRD0NF1. I've checked that the dive is functional on not just my PC, but also a separate laptop. So the drive isn't malfunctioning as far as I can tell. My console is running the latest public system update.

I'd like to use the drive for more game storage as that was the point of getting this specific drive. All the reviews pointed to it being a fast reliable drive for gaming on the Xbox One.

    :)

Make sure there is only one partition on the drive and try reformatting it on the computer using NTFS. Then try connecting it to the Once. Let us know. Good Luck!

I reformatted the drive and tried it again. I got the same result. It stayed on for 5 seconds, then blinked twice before turning off.

Sorry to hear it. Unfortunately Seagate drives do have a bad history of not working properly with Xbox consoles. Are you able to try a different branded drive? WD drives work very well.

Okay, so I returned the Seagate drive and got a Western Digital Elements 2TB USB 3.0 drive in it's place.

The system recognizes the drive is attached, but will only allow me to use the drive as media storage not game storage. I've tried reformatting twice with the same result. I've tried the power cycling method with the same result. The drive is otherwise fully
    functional.

What else can I try doing?

I don't know if you have tried this but some users have had success when having external drive issues. Disconnect the drive from the console. Hold the power button on the console for 10 seconds or until it shuts down completely. Unplug the power cord
from the back of the console for 5 minutes. Plug the power cord back into the consold (DO NOT connect the external HDD yet). Power up the console and once it is back online and functional connect the external HDD and test for results. Good Luck!

That was the power cycling method I was referring to. So it didn't work.

Ok, can you please try formatting the drive on your PC and then try it on the console again? Thank you.

I tried reformatting twice just to be sure, but it still only wants to see the drive as media storage.

I also tried an older USB 3.0 cable I had from another smaller Western Digital drive with the same results.

Anything else to try or is my system just broken in a weird way?

Can you get to the drive to manage it? If so maybe you can format for games from there.

Do you mean from the setting menu on the system? If yes, I've tried that several times, but the system won't let me do anything to the drive after it sees it as media storage. The option to format the drive on the system is just missing from the menu.

From what I have found, the problem is not with the drive. Since the NXOE update (New Xbox One Experience) which came out late last year with the new dashboard and such, formatting the drive for use with Games and Apps has been buggy. It is not necessarily
your drive that is the problem, in fact it is the xbox update that has been causing all the issues. If you format the drive through your windows computer format it as NTSF. The drive needs to have a partition on it for this to work, it cannot just be formatted.
Then plug it into the console and your setting will come up when you go to settings/system/storage on the xbox. Unfortunately right now, the problem I seem to be having is that the green loading ring keeps spinning forever and it never actually formats the
drive properly. Hope it works better for you!

Microsoft! Fix this problem with the new update, it is very annoying!!!
