Not all games are 50GB but in a few years they will be. That said, I have faith that external support will come in time (hopefully summer time) and if it doesn't I'm sure there will be enough of an uproar to ensure work starts quicktime.

Look at the battery indicator for example. It was left out, there was an uproar, such a small insignificant feature but it was included within 4 months of release. External HDD support takes a little bit longer I imagine but it will happen.

2. Your kidding right.

Why pull up any old Hard Drive and not the one in the console itself, and use camelegg to show your data, which is a Samsung Spinpoint M8 500GB -

camelegg.com/.../N82E16822152289

Which is actually cheaper on Amazon.com (retail. and only $7 dearer for a 1TB version compared to Camelegg (newegg)

If i as a Standard consumer can find cheaper prices elsewhere for the same drive, do you honestly think that Microsoft wasn't paying cost + a couple of dollars (meaning millions of dollars for Samsung)

The difference between the cost of a 1TB and 500gb is minimal at the least when it comes to direct from Manufacture.

Also Dynamic. Noticed i went for WD, an excellent name in HDD's, but Microsoft went for Samsung. So there we go, You know what you have in your console now. Do you like it more now you know you have a Samsung and not a WD.

POP QUIZ EVERYBODY

Console inc 500gb HDD - £429.99 or $499.99

or

Console inc 1TB HDD - £439.99 or $509.00

If they were the two options at launch. Which would you go for? Honest answers please.

I know i would pay an extra £10 for double the space

3. I agree that I would have got a 1TB console if it were an option but I'll also point out that it certainly wouldn't have been £10 more at RRP. Probably would have been closer to £460 or ever £470. Hard Drives may cost next to nothing but that number means
a lot to a lot of people and companies always exploit that and make you pay more.

On that i agree dynamic, they will always try to make the biggest profit possible, but according to prices set out in retail, the difference even back then was not much, just check some of the old threads, in may/june, i found WD HDD with only a £7 difference,
I use WD as a standard because it is considered extremely good for HDD.

But even going for a bigger HDD, they could have still made a good profit.

5. Again, I see your point but in the long term effect, by making people wait, more profit can be achieved. Now people like me and you are confident in what we buy, I picked up a 2TB Seagate drive for £60 and I know it will work when USB expansion is added.

However, not everyone will be that confident. So let's take my 2TB Drive, change the blue light to green or white, stamp an Xbox logo on it next to the Seagate one, redesign the packaging and have it placed next to all the Xbox stuff in stores in every country.
Now people know that it's an officially endorsed drive and it will definitely work, no need to worry. For that piece of mind, let's put a £100 - £150 price tag on it.

Even if a 1TB console option was available which resulted in an extra £30 - £40 profit on the console, for the sake of signing a contract and redesigning a few external drives, we've just generated an extra £90 on every sale which will make more money for
everyone.

it's a sad state of affairs where everything is labelled for the consumer's benefit when it's actually ripping them off but this is corporate business and it doesn't matter who you are, you're getting bent over.

6. Oh yes dynamic, i am sure Xbox One HDDs will be available just after the update, black box, nice glowing white xbox logo, and priced 2x what you could get a standard one for.

and people will buy it, because it will match, or don't know better.

as always dynamic, companies are out to make money. And they do have strategies in place before such things launch with long term releases and extra hardware, to bolster profits, in the long run, that i think is why they chose a 500gb HDD. Because of future
profits and gains.

and i don't blame them. After all, if Microsoft make money, they stay in business, and that would be good for us gamers.
Why pull up any old Hard Drive and not the one in the console itself
Because your assertion was that a
1TB drive was a small cost over a 500GB drive. Why would I pull up the 500GB drive's cost, other than to show there was a $30 spread in price from 500GB to 1TB? Also, MS doesn't source from a single drive manufacturer.
MS is going to pay a contract price. After 2011's flooding in Taiwan,
drive makers may not be willing to cut long-term deals at low prices.

Either way, it doesn't change the fact that there isn't a $7 difference between 1TB and 500GB drives, it's a $20-$40 difference. That's money that can be used to help keep the console profitable. Even at $7, that's $21 vs $28 per console. They're not going
to give up 25% profit for something few will use.
Those aren't valid prices given the cost of increasing HDD space on most desktops and laptops. You're also not taking into account
when the drive contract was cut for the console.

MS is a for-profit company. The extra cost of a 1TB HDD isn't warranted given the masses' usage pattern.

Really ICE, if you had checked to see which drive was in there. I could find a 1tb hard drive much cheaper than that, and one much dearer, what i did, is to show you the actual model used in the Xbox One.

I am trying to understand what that has to do with the price difference between relative HDDs. You can take any HDD you want, the price difference between virtually all of them (excluding SSD), when compared like for like. So WD 500gb to WD 1Tb, or Samsung
500gb to Samsung 1Tb, or most others, and you will see that the price difference is anywhere from £8 to £15. Yes that might equate to $12 to $20 in the US, but as you know, here in Europe, we pay the price on Hardware, so the US get it cheaper, like for like.
Only in games do we beat the US, as our market, seems to be more competative.

It is a valid assumption, considering the amount of people, on here, and on other forums that think 500gb is too small for gaming purposes now. Especially considering the size of games.

ICE, you always bring up valid points and quote in the boxes, which i am grateful for. But even by adding a 1tb HDD, and adding $10 to the price, would still see them in profit, for each console made.
Yes that might equate to $12 to $20 in the US,
No, it doesn't. It's a $20 to $40 difference. It's not $12 to $20.
It isn't. First, people here are not the Masses. Second, you're comparing a small spread of games, essentially AAA blockbusters that burn up massive amounts of disk space. That's not the norm. I have over
430 Steam titles, including many AAA titles which don't break the 20GB mark and are fairly recent. They all fit into about 2TB of space. Because some launch titles are OMGWTFBBQ huge does not mean all, or even most titles, will be.
There are only two choices for MS:

- Carry an extra SKU. Doing that incurs costs all along the supply and support chain. To cover those costs there will not be a $10 delta in pricing. Price out some laptops, changing just the HDD from one capacity to another, and you'll see what I mean. Taken
to an extreme, price out a TiVo Roamio Plus vs a TiVo Roamio Pro. The only difference between the two is a 1TB drive on the Plus vs a 3TB drive on a Pro. The price delta is $200. A 3TB drive doesn't even cost $200. While that's an extreme example, laptop and
desktop HDD upgrades from OEMs are not. The cost delta on upgrades like that is around the same as buying a bare upgrade drive.

- Carry one SKU with a 1TB drive. That leads back to the minimal profit issue - $21 vs $28? They're going to go with $28. Also, you'd get people whining that why can't MS just drop the 1TB drive to 500GB to compete with the PS4 (you know it would happen).

Yes, a 1TB drive would be nice. No, most won't use it (at least, not before USB HDD support is available). The cost is too great to introduce it at launch. The rumor mill has already pointed to some sort of LE console with a 1TB drive coming later. I imagine
that will include some other bits as well such that a $100 delta between 500GB and 1TB console kits will be more palatable. I don't see MS shipping a 1TB kit for $100 over the regular kit cost with no extras. I also don't see them dealing with multiple SKUs
until there's a reason to do so.

10. Well it would seem we will have to agree to disagree, i was not asking for multiple sku's, i was doing a comparrison, and if they had brought out a console with 1tb instead of 500gb, and only put an exta $10 on top, they would have made a profit, as they
are already making $28 per console. I was just trying to lay an idea out there, would people be willing to part with an extra bit of cash for a larger hard drive, and even you cannot deny, the majority would have said yes

So you think considering that they made the assumption that $28 is better than a $21 dollar profit is better, that any profit from a launch console would be nice.

but hey what do i know, i mean, as a consumer, i can only get the same make and model hard drive for £8 more but with double the space of the cheaper one, and i have all the buying power of 1 person........ i can just imagine the buying power of Microsoft.
One of the worlds largest companies....

Hard Drive

I think it should have also been 1TB, but that would have upped the price more so M went with a cheaper alternative of 500GB to start off with. External HDD is now supported on Xbox 1.

What I would like to see on Xbox 1 is for them to make dashboard accessing what's on your consoles HDD not so restrictive. I would like to *back up* my Zoo Tycoon and Minecraft saves to USB but the Dashboard only gives Install and Uninstall options. M (Microsoft)
still sells 4GB Xbox 360 consoles (slim/E versions, I have the 250gb slim Xbox 360 version). I have 13 Xbox 1 games and only 18% free left on my console. It would have been cool to have an internal 1TB Solid State Drive which is faster at reading than a 5400rpm
HDD or even 7200rpm, and has no moving parts compared to HDD's, but again, that would make the console much more expensive, since solid state drives are more expensive per GB than HDD's.

Hello DylanD82,

From what I'm seeing today, the cheapest are 1TB USB 3.0 laptop size drives for approximately $60US. I have used Western Digital 1TB My Passport drives with my Xbox One and One S with no problems. However, the best price per byte right now is the My Passport
Ultra Metal Edition 2TB Portable Hard Drive on sale at the
Microsoft Store
and other online sites for about $100US.

Is there a message on the screen like E68? It sounds like a hdd failure. If your console came with the hard drive you have a one year warranty on both console and hdd. If it was bought after the fact, an oem ms hdd has a 90 day warranty. Bit sounds like
that's the issue unfortunately. You can redownload all items bought and recover all accounts but gamesaves are gone, if it is indeed the issue. For a repair head to
