    Hard drive not formatting


    My Xbox detects the drive just fine its just that when i go to format it as soon as i get to the screen where im supposed to rename it , it closes the renaming prompt and shows me a loading circle and wont budge from there. the Xbox is still responsive i
    can go to the dashboard and quit out and everything. iv tried hard resetting formatting using my computer and using different ports so at this point i think its the xbox soft ware and its probably do to the new preview update. does anyone else have this same
    problem or have a fix to it thanks. also i should mention that in using a 2 tb WD my passport ultra. Thank you.

    Formatting Hard Drive.

    Hello,

    I'm giving my 360 away and would like to know how to format the drive so it's like new from the factory.

    If I just format the drive would it still it useable as is or does it need some system files installed.

    Formatting Hard Drive.

    1.Start your Xbox 360 console without a disc in the tray.

    2.Go to the Settings hub, and choose System.

    3.Select Storage.

    4.Highlight the storage device that you want to format, and then press the Y button on your controller.

    Hey there MARINEM4A1,

    I would first make sure the drive works properly and it's not causing the issue. I would take it and connect it to an already working computer and run WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool. Check if the drive passes both the quick and the extended tests. Checking
    the RAW values of the S.M.A.R.T. status could also be a good idea. Here's a link to the tool:

    If the drive is healthy, do try it on another console if you are able to and see if it works there. Contacting the live support of the console manufacturer could provide you with further useful info. Hard drive not formatting :)

    I have just bpught a 2tb wd drive and mine wont format either and have just got the new windows 10 dashboard

    do you have more then one external drives connected?

    There is a limitation to 3 Game HDD..

    other ideas I don't have now

    Formatting Hard Drive

    The Format Hard Drive function is also there so that you can format external USB 3.0 HDD's with the appropriate Xbox partition for saving games etc. By default, a new external HDD would come with a FAT or NTFS partition which cannot be used for installing
    Xbox games. A NTFS partitioned external hard drive can be used however for extended Game DVR clips.

    Game updates can only be downloaded on to the drive the game is installed to, regardless of what drive is now default for installing or downloading new content. So, if you had have a game on the internal drive, it needs an update but you
    don't have enough space, you would need to do one of the following.

    1. Move the game to the external drive with the free space.

    2. Or delete content on the drive where the game is located to allow the game to be updated.

    This should prevent any confusion in the future.
